Matt Lauer has done countless interviews, but he’s never had to pick the greatest.
Now he has to announce the greatest American of all time.
The co-anchor of NBC’s weekday “Today” program makes a rare foray into prime-time television as the host of “Greatest American,” a Discovery Channel series that airs on four consecutive Sundays starting June 5. Inspired by successful versions in countries such as England, France and Germany, the show lets viewers select the most significant American ever from a list of 100 nominees.
And what a range they represent; from George Washington and Elvis Presley to Amelia Earhart and Madonna … and from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Dr. Phil McGraw. Not to mention Abraham Lincoln, Donald Trump, Tom Cruise, Oprah Winfrey, Helen Keller, Eleanor Roosevelt, Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson, Tiger Woods and both President Bushes, among many others. At the end of the first episode, Lauer will name the 25 finalists, based on polling conducted since the initial list’s announcement. Viewers can then make their choices via the Internet, toll-free phone numbers and text messaging; specifics on those procedures will be given during the show. The second episode will whittle the list of 25 down to five, and the third installment will offer debates by advocates of those remaining candidates. The victor will be declared in the June 26 finale, presented live from New York (in the East). For more info visit AOL.com
