LIVE 8 made its first money for charity yesterday, after more than a million people responded to Bob Geldof’s call to change the world by backing a star-studded concert to help developing countries.
A phone text lottery for tickets to the headline concert in London on July 2, featuring stars such as Madonna, Robbie Williams and Sir Paul McCartney, received a massive response.
By 5pm, nine hours after the contest opened, about 1.5 million people took part in the lottery for 75,000 pairs of tickets for the concert in Hyde Park next month, raising £2.25m.
Tens of thousands of entries were made within 10 minutes.
About 150,000 tickets will be allocated by computer. Four other concerts will be held simultaneously in Paris, Berlin, Rome and Philadelphia, days before the leaders of the world’s richest countries meet in Scotland.
All the events are designed to put pressure on the G8 leaders to tackle the crippling poverty in Africa when they meet at Gleneagles Hotel from July 6-8.
Details of a related concert at Murrayfield stadium in Edinburgh on July 6 will be announced today.
Among the bands expected to be confirmed are Travis, Wet Wet Wet, Texas, Teenage Fanclub and The Proclaimers.
Scottish singer Midge Ure, the co-organiser of Live 8, has also been in talks with Bono, the lead singer of U2, to secure him for the capital.
There is speculation that Annie Lennox, the former Eurthymics singer, may also appear.
