Blender’s Top 500 List
In an answer to Rolling Stone Magazine’s more “old school” Top 500 list, Blender Magazine has released their own list of the Top 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born. The list, comprised only of songs published after 1980, features a blend of popular hits from hip-hop, pop and rock.
Starting with Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” at #1, Outkast takes hip-hop’s highest honors in the #2 spot for “Bombs Over Baghdad” off their Stankonia album. Behind Nirvana, Madonna, U2 and Guns & Roses, Run DMC take hip-hop’s next position at #8 for their classic, “Sucker MCs.” Finally rounding out at the #10 spot behind Britney Spears is 50 Cent for his 2003 banger, “In Da Club.”
Other rap notables include Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five’s “The Message” at #11, The Beastie Boys, “Fight for Your Right (To Party)” at #12, Eminem’s intro song, “My Name Is” at #13 and The Notorious BIG at #19 for “Hynotize.” The rest of the list includes favorites from Rick James to Diana Ross to Doug E. Fresh.
As a diss to Rolling Stone Magazine, Blender Magazine’s Editor-In-Chief touts “the best music hasn’t just been made by dead guys and by white guys in ponytails.” “In the great tradition of rap records, it’s an answer to the list Rolling Stone did in every way,” said Craig Marks, editor in chief of Blender.
Blender’s Top 500 list edition is on newsstands now.
