Confessions on a Dancefloor Style Weekly Review

Just when wearing tweed and writing children's books were about to render Madonna about as hip as the queen of England, she reminds us that she's still the high priestess of pop with this invigorated dance record. Revisiting the electro-laden grooves of her "Music" release (2000) and early singles like "Everybody," movement is at the disco-glittered core. From the opening ABBA-sampled string swoops of "Hung Up," the CD takes off like a thrill ride leaving the listener dizzy with unrelenting rhythms. The only reprieve comes in the form of ethereal intros that undulate with quickening pulses and eventually bust out into fierce, throbbing bass bounces. Many tracks are indistinguishable, sounding like remixes of each other, but this is the album's only fault. Other tracks, like "Push" and "Like It or Not," venture into more experimental territory, infusing the dance party with world-music percussion loops, tinkling chimes and strings. Straightforward, sweaty pop without a slow jam to be had, these 12 songs offer up a searing burst of dance fury showcasing what Madonna does best.
