Madonna was "shocked" and "devastated" yesterday by Lowdown's exclusive about the vicious Âattack on her children's book illustrator Jeffrey Fulvimari which left the artist in the hospital with multiple skull fractures, including a broken eye socket.
"She was very devastated at the news," Madge's spokeswoman, Liz Rosenberg, told me yesterday after speaking with the 47-year-old pop diva. "It was shocking news. She's very fond of Jeffrey "¦ and she will be reaching out to be him."
The 43-year-old Fulvimari who illustrated Madonna's 2003 book "The English Roses" checked out of St. Vincent's yesterday on his way home to upstate New York.
"The police came to see me today," he said, crediting Lowdown for heightened interest in his case. "At least somebody is taking it seriously now, and I want to thank you so much because I felt like nobody cared about me."
Fulvimari, who said he'll get surgery on his left eye after the swelling goes down, was beaten by three thugs at a Chelsea parking facility in the wee hours Sunday after leaving the nightspot Crobar. A friend, Ricardo Paredes, suffered a dislocated shoulder and other injuries.
"It wasn't a robbery, it was a very focused attack," Fulvimari said on Monday. "I don't even know what hit me. My friend isn't even gay, I am. "¦ I just have a feeling we looked like a couple getting into a car." But later, he dismissed the "hate crime" theory.
A detective yesterday visited the scene at W. 28th St. and 11th Ave. and interviewed a witness. A police spokesman told Lowdown: "The detectives are investigating the complaint at this time, and we have nothing further to report."
An employee of the parking facility said: "Saturday nights, it's crazy. People are yelling, they've been drinking. You can't tell if people are fighting or just playing around."
