Madonna has launched a scathing attack on the congestion charge in London, admitting she refuses to pay it despite being charged every time she floats the toll.
The pop superstar, fresh from claiming the Best Pop Brit last night, is entitled to a 90 per cent discount on the charge because she lives in Marylebone.
However, Madonna refuses to apply for the reduction because it will involve giving her address out, something she feels uncomfortable about, resulting in a £100 charge for each breach of the rule.
Speaking backstage at The Brits, she explained: "I'm pissed off about the congestion charge. It's ridiculous. I live there and I've got to pay.
"I can't pay because they want my phone number. Why would I give my number? I may get a pay-as-you-go phone so they can't know where I live."
A Transport For London spokesman, speaking to The London Evening Standard, insisted Madonna is not entitled to "special treatment".
He insisted: "You have to prove you are living in the congestion charge area to get the 90 per cent discount. That means giving your address, which is only fair.
"The rules are the same for everyone. No one gets special treatment."
