Every female student at Mason County Intermediate School received a special gift Wednesday in the form of a book written by international pop sensation Madonna.
The book, The English Roses, was Madonna’s first attempt to pen a story for younger children. The story describes four young friends who ostracize a fifth girl because she is too “perfect.” They exclude her from their games until one night they all experience a dream which gives them a glimpse into the homelife of the girl, which is not as enviable as they had presumed.
According to a posting on Oprah.com, which reviewed the children’s book, the story is “an inspiring story about the importance of compassion and the rewards of friendship.”
“The context of the story is actually a moral story,” said Paula Insko, the guidance counselor at the school who was passing the books out to the girls.
Insko said when school officials first deliberated about handing the books out to students, the thought that some parents might object to the book, since it was written by Madonna. However, Insko said the group proofread the content, and determined it was not inappropriate. In fact, she said many parents who have said they dislike Madonna have told Insko they loved the book. About 300 books were provided by Licking Valley, which purchased them to distribute to schools throughout the district.
Students from different classes filtered into the library at various times during the day to receive their books. Their eyes often opened wide at the sight of the boxes of books, and their smiles grew large as they realized those books were a gift for them.
“I really like it,” said fifth-grade student Madison Harper. “I think it really inspires you on how to make friends.”
Harper said she had never heard of Madonna until they received the books, encased in a charming, colorful bag that grabbed the girls interest as well.
“This is a nice gift,” said Mikalaya Chain, also a fifth-grade student. “They’re cool.”
To each group of students, Insko made a presentation, letting them know each one of them is special, and they were going to receive a special gift.
“This is your day, girls,” she said. “I want you to remember this story always.”

Given her famously fearless nature, the only surprise is that it didn’t happen sooner. A few months after being thrown from her horse and needing hospital treatment, Madonna has determinedly got back in the saddle to ride unaided for the first time.
The singer arrived at a ranch in the Simi Valley near her Los Angeles home looking pale and a little fragile after partying until 5am following the Oscars ceremony in Hollywood.
After tentatively getting on the animal, she trotted around the yard for a few moments led by a trainer, pulling on the reins and leaning back in the saddle. She then leant forward and praised the horse.
Gaining confidence, she broke into a canter and later joined three other riders on the open road. ‘She started out looking really, really nervous,’ said an onlooker. ‘But the longer she was on the horse, the more confident she became.’
In the riding accident last August, Madonna suffered three cracked ribs, a broken collarbone and a fractured hand. It happened at her country home Ashcombe House in Wiltshire, where she had been celebrating her 47th birthday with her husband Guy and children Rocco and Lourdes.
Since then, she has been on a horse only once but that was a publicity stunt for a U.S. chat show and it is believed the animal was led by a trainer.

Pop star Madonna has accused American citizens of being afraid of electing a female as president of the United States.
The singer believes while other countries embrace female leadership, Americans are frightened by the concept.
She explains: “In Europe and Asia and elsewhere, women have ruled over millions; it’s not an abstract or frightening or out-of-the-box concept.
“But in America, men are still afraid of women. And women, I don’t think, trust women. I find that amazing.”
The star, who famously portrayed Argentine political icon Eva Peron, would support senator Hilary Clinton if she chose to run for president.
She adds: “She should go for it, definitely. I don’t think maybe now is her time, or the Democrats’ time, but she should certainly go for it.
“You’ve got to start somewhere in terms of women leading the US.”

Madonna showed she is still top of the riding crops – even if her single Sorry has been knocked off the top spot.
The chart-topping singer has got back in the saddle again following a hernia operation last month in the United States.
Madonna, 47, had broken her collarbone, ribs and hand after falling from a horse at her Wiltshire estate in August. At the time, she feared the accident would derail the launch of her current album Confessions On A Dance Floor.
But the queen of pop says she is “strong again” after her fall.
And she showed it yesterday as she took the reins at a ranch in the Simi Valley, California.
