Madonna ready for European tour

Final preparations are being made as Madonna kicks off the European leg of her 'Confessions' tour in Cardiff.
The show on Sunday at the Millennium Stadium will be the biggest arena yet for the world tour, which started in the Los Angeles in May.
Around 59,000 fans are expected for the show, the first of 21 dates across Europe, including eight in London.
Adapting her show to each venue, the singer will include an equestrian theme during the opening in Cardiff.
The star's tour director Chris Lamb, from California, has worked with Madonna for 20 years.
He and his "army" have been constructing the set in the stadium since Monday. With 150 workers over from the USA, Mr Lamb said they also employed around 200 local people.
"We've done 35 shows in America in indoor arenas, this here is the first stadium show for two years," he said.
"People are not coming to see a rock concert - this is a show, closer to theatre than a rock concert."
Mr Lamb said the cost of the concert was "enormous" but added it was all relative the whole expense of the tour.
After two decades of working with Madonna Mr Lamb believes the singer will never retire.
"I don't think she'll ever stop.
"She's a perfectionist, focused and she knows every little thing about the show," he added. "She wants to outdo herself and challenges herself."
And with regards to the set she "comes up with the basic idea and is involved from square one."
The tour director said the set was "enormously technical" and was state of the art with its video show.
However two large silver "disco horses" backdrops placed on each side of the stage have not been approved by Madonna yet.
Even though she's seen the drawings Mr Lamb awaits her verdict before they get final approval.
The media, invited to the stadium on Friday, were not allowed to photograph them.
DJ Paul Oakenfold will open the Hung Up singer's concert at 1900 BST and will perform his set for around an hour and a half before Madonna's two-hour show.
There will be a "golden circle" to hold around 3,000 fans in front of the stage on a first come first serve basis.
Madonna's tour continues at Wembley Arena and finishes in Prague before it moves to Japan in September.

List of Madonna's diva demands

It takes quite a bit to keep Madonna happy while she's on tour, or at least that's what her list of diva demands says. The Queen of pop, who is currently on her Confessions world tour, is not only very particular about what throne she places her dierre on while in the loo, but also a must for her room are the three candles to protect her from negative looks and bad blood. "The seat has to be inspected by her people, then installed - with an unbroken seal - by plumbers before every gig," The Mirror quoted a source, as saying. The candles include one DNA Of The Soul candle, made of a blend of lemon, lemon grass, tea, cinnamon and myrrh, meant to "restore meaning to lives that often feel meaningless", the second a Power of Prosperity candle meant to give people the strength to keep their ego in check, and the third one, an Evil Eye candle, that protects her being from negative glances. The "˜Hung Up' singer also needs an Ein Gedi Dead Sea Foot Spa, with lavender and camomile Body Soak, to help her relax those hurting feet once she's off stage, unsalted Edamame - a type of Japanese pea to snack on so that she can maintain that stunning figure. Also a must in the room is a love seat to relax upon while surrounded by the dozens of white roses that fill her dressing room at every venue. And keeping with the white theme, the songbird also insists that everything in her room, including the wall, be draped in white - the symbolic colour of the mystic Jewish faith her faith, Kabbalah. Another thing that needs to be in reach of the star, for whom cleanliness is next to godliness, are bottles of Kabbalah water.

Here's a list of Madonna's must haves:
1 New seat cover on her loo
2 Three Kabbalah candles to protect and keep her safe
3 White roses in the dressing room
4 An all white dressing room - including the walls
5 A love seat
6 Bottles of Kabbalah water
7 An Ein Gedi Dead Sea Foot Spa
8 Unsalted Edamame - a type of Japanese pea to snack on

"Titanic" Star Comes To Rescue At Madonna Concert

Leonardo DiCaprio came to the rescue of a wheelchair-bound fan at a Madonna concert.
The "Titanic" star rushed to help Francesco Clark, after he got into difficulty when the crowd surged forward and almost toppled him out of his chair at the singer's Madison Square Garden show last week.
Clark's friend, writer Elisa Lipsky-Karasz revealed to America's New York Post newspaper: "Francesco couldn't see anything because people were all standing around him. He tried to move to the front, but no one would budge, and nobody cared. Then the security guard came over and was being rude and told him to move. At that point, Leo came over and said, 'Why don't you come sit with me and I'll just move over.'"
Clark - who was involved in a car accident which left him a quadriplegic, and now runs the Clark's Botanicals skin-care company - took up the star's kind offer and moved into the area which was located directly in front of a no-standing zone.
DiCaprio also extended his generous invitation to another wheelchair-bound fan who was struggling to get a good view of the stage.

Madonna tops MTV videos poll

Madonna's "Like a Prayer" was voted the most groundbreaking video of all time in a survey by 24-hour music channel MTV, beating Britney Spears' "Baby One More Time" and Michael Jackson's "Thriller".
The top 10 "videos that broke the rules" was released on Monday ahead of an MTV broadcast of the top 100 videos on August 1 to mark the channel's 25th anniversary.
Three Madonna tracks appear in the top 10, with "Ray of Light" and "Vogue" in fourth and fifth positions respectively.
"Featuring burning crosses, statues crying blood and Madonna seducing a black Jesus, (Like a Prayer) even brought condemnation from the Vatican for its use of religious imagery," MTV said.
In sixth position were Michael and Janet Jackson with "Scream", followed by Robbie Williams and "Rock DJ" in which the singer appears to be peeling off his own skin.
More than 10,000 MTV viewers voted in the poll.

2. Britney Spears - Baby One More Time (1999)

American radio hangs up on Madonna

Madonna is in the midst of a sold-out North American trek that may end up being the top-grossing tour ever by a female artist. But this on-the-road success is not carrying over to American radio, which largely snubbed the first three singles from her latest album.
"Hung Up" got middling airplay on mainstream top 40 outlets, "Sorry" was barely played, and "Get Together" has been all but ignored by pop stations. (Her album, "Confessions on a Dance Floor," has sold a healthy 1.5 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.)
Naturally, the disconnect has left executives at her Warner Bros. label -- and more than a few fans -- wondering, what gives?
More than 3,300 fans have signed an appeal at http://www.petitiononline.com. The "End the Madonna on U.S. Radio Boycott" petition is addressed to Clear Channel Communications CEO Mark P. Mays.
Message boards at Entertainment Weekly and VH1, among others, are rife with everything from support for Madonna to conspiracy theories about why she can't crack the radio dial.
Warner Bros. was aware that the songs on "Confessions" could present challenges at mainstream top 40 radio, acknowledges Tom Biery, the label's senior VP of promotions. "Top 40 radio is so hip-hop-driven," he says. "We were coming in with a global pop star who made a dance record."
Guy Zapoleon, president of radio consulting firm Zapoleon Media Strategies, calls it an "interesting dilemma for the woman who certainly held the 'Queen of Pop' title for almost 15 years." Madonna's ability to redefine herself is well-documented, and Zapoleon says that this has helped her keep a "leading edge" to the new group of pop music fans that comes along every three to five years.
But this time, Madonna may have turned left while the pop climate was turning right. Other pop chameleons such as Nelly Furtado and Mariah Carey reinvented themselves with recent rhythmic/hip-hop-leaning singles. Madonna opted instead to return to her dance-pop roots.
According to Dom Theodore, regional VP of programming for Clear Channel and program director of top 40 WKQI Detroit, today's programmers consider each Madonna song on a case-by-case basis to determine if it fits mainstream top 40, adult top 40 or both. Or neither.
For Theodore, the sound of "Confessions on a Dance Floor" skews more retro-adult top 40 than mainstream top 40, while recent club tracks like Rihanna's "SOS" have "more hip-hop credibility." The Rihanna jam may reference an early-'80s dance hit (Soft Cell's "Tainted Love") but Theodore believes it does not have the same "retro '70s feel" as the Madonna tracks.
Madonna has had no such problems internationally. Since its release last November, "Confessions on a Dance Floor" has topped the charts in 29 countries and sold more than 8 million copies worldwide, according to Warner Bros.
George Ergatoudis, head of music at BBC Radio 1 in the United Kingdom, says that while U.S. mainstream top 40 radio may be driven by urban, rock and straight-ahead pop, dance records -- house music, in particular -- are very much part of the top 40 radio culture in the United Kingdom and Europe.
Except for dance radio outlets like KNGY San Francisco, KNRJ Phoenix and KNHC Seattle, Madonna is missing from the terrestrial radio landscape in the United States.
As Warner Bros. gears up for the release of the album's fourth single, "Jump," Biery remains optimistic, especially since the song was heard in TV and radio spots for the hit film "The Devil Wears Prada."

Fans Sweat Out Madonna Concert

Madonna left fans hot under the collar after demanding the air-conditioning was turned down at her New York concert last night. The Hung Up singer turned up the heat at her sell-out concert at Madison Square Garden - because of her sensitive vocal cords.
Fans suffered in the blistering heat on one of the hottest days of the year and the temperature soared to 90 degrees as Madonna belted out her final song.
One fan, Stephanie Krukovsky, told New York Daily News newspaper: "It's suffocating in here. I'm disappointed that the air conditioner is not on. I have been fanning myself all night."
Some veteran fans, aware of Madonna's anti air-conditioning rants, came prepared - bringing along electric hand fans with them to keep cool. Olga Byrne said: "It's really, really bad. It's so hot."

Madonna's Note to Australian Fans

To my fans in Australia

Please forgive me. I really did hope and expect to come to Australia during the Confessions Tour and asked my managers to try to include some shows there. I have fond memories from previous tours.Unfortunately, the logistics just didn't work out this time around. We looked into going from Japan to Australia and ending the show there but I have to get my kids back into school in England and they are, as you can understand, my most important priority. The important thing to remember is that I'm not retiring anytime soon and I am gonna get to Australia as soon as I can. You remain in my heart and Thank you for your continued love & support.

Love,
Madonna

Confessions Tour - Philly.com Review

Apart from Michael Jackson, no one has made pop music as much about looking as listening than Madonna.
And at the Wachovia Center on Wednesday - where the Material Mum will perform again last night, before playing Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on Sunday - there was plenty to see.
Many a pose was struck, starting with the world's most famous woman emerging from a disco ball in full dominatrix landed-gentry gear, complete with riding crop and horse-hair ponytail protruding from her top hat.
The opening song, "Future Lovers," from last year's electro-groove collection, Confessions on a Dance Floor, was inconsequential, though it tantalizingly did give way to Donna Summer's "I Feel Love." Madge did feel love from the adoring, largely female, significantly gay intergenerational audience, who didn't seem to mind the balmy temperatures, apparently the result of some air-conditioning blowers being turned off to preserve the singer's precious vocal cords.
The Devon Horse Show was never like this: Before that opening tableaux was finished, Madonna had ridden bareback on one of her super-athletic male dancers, and laid in a barn with a horse in a prerecorded video. She ran through her tepid new single, "Get Together," and performed "Like A Virgin" while gyrating on a saddle anchored to a stripper pole.
For that, she was accompanied by a video montage of steeplechase horses and riders falling, as Madonna herself did in August - ill-timed, considering the uncertain fate of horse-hero of the moment, Barbaro. There also were X-rays of her own injuries, thus letting fans who wish to get more than skin-deep see her not only in the glorious flesh, but also the broken bone.
That, of course, was just for starters. The hyper-energetic two-hour show also included, in its most desperate attempt to shock, a disappointingly static reading of "Live to Tell" in which the pop-star-as-Christ-figure wore a crown of thorns and was attached to a crucifix - all to better absorb the suffering caused by AIDS, gang violence and child abuse in the world.
And that wasn't the only point in the evening in which the focus shifted from Madonna's body - which despite its nearly 48 years is nothing short of fabulous - to the body politic. An interlude of video clips of bad guys - Richard Nixon, Saddam Hussein, Adolph Hitler - was followed by the aging agent provocateur emerging in black leather and fake-fur collar, electric guitar strapped on, for a Ziggy-Stardust-meets-Sonic-Youth version of "I Love New York." A truly terrible song, it included an improvised, profane reference to the president.
When not weighed down by pretension, Confessions on a Dance Floor hearkens back enjoyably to a pre-AIDS disco era of innocence and sexual liberation. Musically, the most successful numbers were those free of too much high-concept staging and blessed with catchy tunes, such as "Sorry," "Jump," and the aerobicizing closer, "Hung Up."
That went for the old hits as well, and it would have been nice if she'd done more of them. Her singing - supplemented by two backup singers and a turbaned Yemeni named Isaac - was effective all night, though whether there was any electronic vocal reinforcement was impossible to say.
Madonna's current musical collaborator, an imperturbable Brit named Stuart Price, led a four-piece computer- and keyboard-driven band that tended to treat everything with an undifferentiated bass-heavy throb.
The bass kept "La Isla Bonita" from being as bouncy as it should have been, but couldn't stand in the way of "Lucky Star" or "Music" which quoted the Trammps' "Disco Inferno," and found the star strutting her stuff in a white three-piece suit, Tony Manero-style. That was fitting - and form-fitting - because ambition, like John Travolta's character in Saturday Night Fever, has always been Madonna's main subject.
Refusing to take no for an answer, at one point she scolded fans for not being enthusiastic enough: "If you're going to be my front-row bitches, you got to give it up." And on Confessions' "Like It or Not," she sounded the familiar theme that Madonna is quite comfortable being Madonna: "You can love me or leave me," she sang. "Cause I'm never gonna stop."
Don't worry, Madge, we wouldn't have dreamed of thinking that you would.

Russia Promised Madonna This Fall

St. Petersburg NCA entered into a contract for Russia's concert of famous Madonna, Intermedia reported yesterday. NCA hasn't officially confirmed the information, but promised to make a statement in one of these days. The pop star will probably sing in the Moscow Red Square in September.
So far, Madonna has been generally thought a pop star, whose concert none of the touring companies in Russia is able to arrange. One of the reasons is her fee, which is said to range from $1 million to $2 million. What's more, her concerts require equipment of extreme sophistication and the singer tends to put forward some special demands to Russia's impresarios. By hearsay, she wanted a personal meeting with Boris Yeltsin in the 1990's.
The agitation will start in Moscow once Madonna's tour is formally acknowledged. "We won't confirm anything for the moment. Wait for three or four days," said NCA CEO Mikhail Shurygin.
"By request of Madonna's management, we provided to the U.S. party early this summer the drawings and layouts of service lines of all biggest facilities of Moscow including the Red Square, Vasilievsky Spusk (Slope) and the area close to Moscow State University. The matter in hand was the possibility to assemble a stage for September 12 concert. But we have no exact information, who will bring Madonna and where," said Alexey Kotelnikov from JSA, which supplies stage structures for all big concerts of the city.

Jump - 4th Single from Confessions On A Dance Floor ?

from Ask Billboard

Hello Keith.
I was wondering about the status of Madonna's third single from "Confessions on a Dance Floor." I heard that "Get Together" was her last commercial single from the album, although it seems that it contains a handful of other tracks that are single-worthy.
Also, is "Get Together" getting any attention at radio? It seems to have missed the Billboard Hot 100. Finally, how is "Confessions on a Dance Floor" doing sales-wise? Is it becoming a huge seller like "Ray of Light" or is it stalling in sales?
Thanks. I love reading your column every Thursday.
Nathan Gil
Sarasota, Fla.

Hello Nathan,
Don't worry, "Get Together" is not the final single from Madonna's "Confessions on a Dance Floor." The fourth single will be "Jump."
"Get Together" has pretty much stalled out on American radio. A handful of dance stations are spinning the track a lot, but the vast majority of outlets have ignored the song. (Unsurprisingly, "Get Together" is doing well on the radio in many countries outside of America.)
So far, the single has yet to enter the Billboard Hot 100. Even though the U.S. radio picture is bleak, the song could still chart based on its digital and retail sales. Perhaps if the psychedelic animated music video for the song starts to get some serious screen time on the video networks, consumers will be motivated to buy the track via digital download services.
If it gets enough sales, it could enter the Billboard Hot 100 and become Madonna's 53rd chart hit.
So far, "Confessions on a Dance Floor" has sold 1.5 million in the U.S. according to Nielsen SoundScan. That's more than twice what her last studio album, 2003's "American Life," has sold (666,000). It's still a long way from catching up to "Ray of Light," which has sold 3.8 million in America.

Touring in support of her 2005 album, Confessions on a Dancefloor, Madonna's 2006 tour is an all out disco spectacular that sees the Material Girl dancing her way across North America and Europe through the summer.
Perhaps this summer's hottest concert ticket, this is Madonna's second tour in a row in which lighting designer Roy Bennett has turned to a Martin lighting package. PRG's Las Vegas office has supplied 47 MAC 700 Profiles, 31 MAC 2000 Washes, 82 Atomic strobes with Atomic Colors and other automateds for the tour.
"Some of what we did this year was based on what was done on the previous tour but we expanded on that," Roy explains. "We have a combination of MAC 700 Profiles, MAC 2000 Washes and other automated lights both in the rig and on the floor, all over really, doing a lot such as the soft good washes over and around the stage area.
"The physical staging extends far out, it's massive, with a lot of lights that come way out into the audience. It's a huge video show and we use the moving heads to support the video elements - an extension of what's going on video wise.
"All of Madonna's shows are very theatrical with a lot of subtleties but with big, in your face looks too. The show has a prominent disco theme so we wanted to turn the venue into a huge disco at times. It's a very dynamic show."

New Madonna Interview from OK Magazine

After falling off a horse, most pop stars would cancel their tour, halt production on their album, freeze all promotional activity and stay in bed. But not Madonna. The music icon fractured three ribs after a riding accident at her home in England, but managed to squeeze into a slinky outfit and shoot the video for "Hung Up," the single from her latest album, Confessions on a Dance Floor. "I have a high pain threshold," explains Madonna, 47. "It's remarkable." It sure is. As her new tour ruffles feathers with it's controversial content, we delved into the mind of the mother of two and wife of British movie director Guy Ritchie.

Misunderstood Madonna
I'm constantly, forever, defending sound bites. People are always taking things I say out of context, and then I have to defend that one line, when, if they had done their research, they wouldn't jump to the conclusions that they jump to. You end up spending entire interviews saying, "I didn't say that.... No, that's not true."

Free Time
I don't have a lot of free time, so when I do, it's all about being with my kids. The ice-skating rink, pizza, movies, being in the countryside watching my daughter ride her horse, going for walks... kind of boring, right? Times have certainly changed, but it's all good.

Out on the Town
Last week I went to a club and danced with my friends, and it was really fun. I do it sometimes. When I'm on tour, I go to clubs with a few of my dancers. I don't do it as music as I used to. Who's got free time? Who can stay up all night?

My Latest Album
I'm ecstatic that people are digging the music. I just feel that my enthusiasm and my joy in connecting with people and that's a great thing. I play the album when I'm in the gym or when I go for a run or am doing yoga.

Why a Dance Album?
Why not? I guess because I've been making records for 20 years now, and dance music is where life began for me-- in a disco. My first love is dance music, and I wanted to get back to that.

Finding Inspiration
I think it's about paying attention. For instance, I say David LaChapelle's movie "Rize", and it had incredible dancers in it. I found out who the dancers were and put them in my next video. I have an insatiable hunger and curiosity to find out about new things. Inevitably those things find their way into my work. I think that's what we all do as artists and creative people. We're all plagiarizing!

Going Back in Time
I didn't go back and listen to my own old records, but a lot of my music and lyrics are a part of my unconscious and they come up without me even thinking about it.

My Producer, Stuart Price
We've known each other for five years now, and I think that working together on many things has helped us to feel more familiar with each other. When we started, I think there was a little of that intimidation factor and Stuart many have been nervous. Writing music with people is very intimate; you have to feel comfortable-- famous or not. We spent a lot of time in the studio together. In all honesty, I got nervous being around him in the studio because when you write lyrics and then come into the studio and sing them for someone for the first time, it can be very nerve-wracking. You wonder if they might think the lyrics stink, or they may thing the melody is crap. You really have to make yourself vulnerable.

'Hung Up' -- the Song
"Hung Up" came about when Stuart brought the track to me in the very rough form about a year ago. He asked me what I thought. I heard the ABBA sample and loved it. I cranked it up in my car and drove around the city. I told him I loved the track and that we needed to turn it into a song. I wrote the lyrics to it in about 10 minutes.

'Hung Up' the Video
The inspiration for the video was mostly "Saturday Night Fever". I hope I was channeling John Travolta! I watched it about 20 times with Jamie King, the choreographer, and Johan Renck, the director, and we just wanted to create [an atmosphere] where everyone's world revolved around dance music.

Dominating the Dance Market
I'm not claiming ownership over any territory. I'm just making music that I love to make. I didn't start it. Chic started it, Donna Summer started it. It's not mine. I don't take the credit.

Before I Was Famous
I miss the freedom of going out to a nightclub by myself, walking in there, onto the dance floor, and dancing the night away without anyone bothering me or noticing me.

Family Feedback
My kids love all the stuff I've done, they love dance music. My husband, on the other and, is not a big dance music fan, so he likes some of the tracks, but not all of them.

Getting Philosophical
We live in a society that values fame and fortune. At the end of the day, will these things matter? Will it really matter how many records I've sold? Or how many times I was number one? Or how pretty or foxy I was? Or how popular I was? Will any of those things matter? I think lots of people ask that question.

Is It Worth It?
I think a lot of people in the public eye who are constantly being judged, putting themselves out there and taking risks, having highs and lows, all have to ask themselves that question at some point. You have to ask yourself, "What am I doing this for and how important is is to me?" because you have to make a lot of sacrifices along the way.

My Next Move
I just want to do more of what I do and be better at it. There's nothing specific I want to achieve. I could do another dance album, but I don't like to repeat myself. Maybe I could do a ballad album, or maybe I'll write a musical, or I might direct a film and do all the music in the film, you know what I mean? Anything's possible.

My Style
I consider myself to be a chameleon. I can be working on an Olivia Newton-John or a Farrah Fawcett look, it just depends. It's all about changing and evolving. I never see myself as making one particular fashion statement. Any one of my looks is just one side to me. When I wandering around my house in the country, I'm not wearing polka-dot chiffon dresses, okay?! As soon as you think you've got me pigeonholed, I'm going to surprise you. There are many sides to my personality-- there always have been and there always will be.

Madonna denies quitting Kabbalah

Pop superstar Madonna has quashed rumours she's leaving obscure Jewish sect Kabbalah over concerns for her finances and family relations.
The Material Girl singer is reportedly fed up of the financial burden of championing the Jewish belief system, and also fears the teachings are compromising her relationship with husband Guy Ritchie and her children.
One area of alleged contention is Christmas - which the family currently do not celebrate. Madonna would now reportedly prefer her kids not to be alienated from conventional customs.
Adding weight to speculation of a religious rift, pals claim the singer is thinking of ditching Kabbalah's trademark bracelet. However, a spokeswoman for Madonna insists she has no plans to cut any strings. She says, "As far as I am aware, it is completely untrue."

Confessions Tour - Boston Herald Review

Madonna may be pressing the same old ideological buttons, but the Confessions tour is a stunning musical makeover.
The '80s electropop sound of Madonna's latest permeates the entire two-hour show, and last night she tore up the TD Banknorth Garden for the first of three Boston appearances.
Emerging from a one-and-a-half-ton disco ball, Madge appeared in riding gear, complete with top hat and crop. A sly grin came over her face as the crowd gave her the iconoclastic embrace that keeps her performing - it's what gets her off. Thus truly being in her element as the center of attention, she gave us her all in return.
Bondage-noir imagery dominated the show's first quarter, featuring a fantastic cover of the Donna Summer-Giorgio Moroder classic, "I Feel Love" between her opener, "Future Lovers" and latest single, "Get Together." Though it's impossible to tell how much vocal management is going on during the more demanding, theatrical numbers, Madonna sounded rehearsed and on target.
The juxtaposition of her broken-boned X-rays and a video montage of equestrian accidents to soundtrack "Like a Virgin" isn't that much of a reach - it's a contemplation of innocence getting shattered, much the same way bones break.
Madonna spoke to the crowd several times, inviting (and even demanding) us to sing and dance with her. She teased, asked if we loved her - asked if we'd die for her. But moreover she was spirited and friendly; the Confessions show is obviously a blast for her, but it's also exhausting work.
"Live to Tell" featured an authoritative and impassioned vocal performance, sang from the rumored cross-and-crown of thorns stage set. The bitchy house vibe of "Sorry" had the entire floor jumping in a unified mass.
The muted industrial tones of "Like It or Not" came across with deliciously sassy irreverence, as did "Let it Will Be" later in the set.
After a series of images that seemed to feature famed liars, (George Dubyah, Condoleezza Rice, Nixon, Chairman Mao, bin Laden), Madonna transformed herself into a punk vixen, strapped on her electric guitar and launched into a raunchy "I Love New York," followed by a similarly edgy "Ray of Light."
"Music" got a righteous mash-up with The Trammps' "Disco Inferno" and Maddy dressed as Travolta with a white bell-bottomed leisure suit. Her dancers sailed all over the stage on roller skates. "Erotic" was renewed with an updated, catchy euro-disco pulse, as was "Lucky Star," which transcended the original's teeny-bopping tone.
Madonna closed with "Hung Up," her vocally weakest number. But by that point, we'd have forgiven her for just about anything.

Confessions Tour - Boston.com Review

Anyone who attended Madonna's show at the TD Banknorth Garden last night is hereby excused from the cardio portion of their workout today.
When the veteran pop superstar said she wanted her "Confessions Tour" to feel like one big disco, she wasn't fooling.
For almost the entire, frenzied, two-hour performance, Madonna -- whether on her own or backed by some combination of her cadre of spectacular dancers -- was in constant motion, and the sold-out crowd of 15,076 got down right along with her.
You can nitpick the music (the set list had imperfections), debate the visual accompaniment -- some of her "political" statements felt clunky with the glitzy, booty-shaking atmosphere -- and you can gripe about the ticket prices. But never let it be said that anyone works harder onstage than Madonna.
It's clear that the 47-year-old is enjoying her music and her incredibly toned body -- apparently yoga and Pilates really, really work. That joy showed in the performance, which felt more upbeat than those in the past.
She began the night, appropriately, emerging from a giant mirror ball over a runway that ran straight through the center of the arena. Decked out in equestrian gear -- the first of seven costumes -- she was up to her old tricks in no time as she took a quick ride on one of her burly male dancers for the opener "Future Lovers," which merged briefly with homegirl Donna Summer's "I Feel Love."
The night's first big cheer came for "Like a Virgin," which found Madge writhing atop a saddle. (Disturbing footage of riding accidents -- recalling her own -- on the large video screens may have been a buzz kill for some. )
And as much as she's a diva, Madonna also isn't afraid to let the spotlight occasionally fall elsewhere. She seems to construct her shows for her own entertainment as much as the crowd, and songs like "Jump," featuring a group of "parkours" -- urban jungle gymnasts -- jumping, climbing, and running headlong toward a nutty jungle gym contraption were eye-popping.
The politicized portions of the show felt airlifted in from some other much more serious performance. "Live to Tell," with it's mammoth disco crucifix, was meant as a paean to survival -- complete with dance interpretations of child abuse -- and the reprise of "Sorry," with visual images of flames overlaid on African AIDS orphans, both seemed heartfelt but preachy.
An ecstatic "Ray of Light," on the other hand, got the blood pumping again, and Madonna may be the only person to ever get a Boston crowd to chant "I Love NY," as she did during the glam rock version of that song.
An acoustic section was the best vocal showcase as Madonna simply stood still and played guitar on a tender, unadorned version of "Drowned World/Substitute For Love" and the gently computerized "Paradise (But Not For Me)."
The night was brought to its thumping conclusion with the shuddering rhythms of "Hung Up" as Madonna and her dancers alternately jumped, crawled, and threw themselves across every inch of the stage, knowing that this was their last dance.
The second of the three shows on Sunday is also sold out, but tickets for Monday's show remain.

Confessions Tour - Projo.com Review

Well, if you couldn't tell at the beginning when she descended from the ceiling in a giant glitter ball, the set list of Madonna's concert (the first of three sold-out shows at the TD BankNorth Garden) confirmed she has, in fact, come back to the hardcore dance music that gave her her start.
Most people who have been around as long as she has are apologetically slipping a couple of songs from their latest album into the set list, but last night's show included 10 songs from Madonna's latest, Confessions on a Dance Floor. She applied that record's mix of early-'80s styles such as house, Eurodisco and early techno to old favorites such as "Like a Virgin" and "La Isla Bonita" as well. The conventional wisdom says 2004's American Life album was a disappointment, and if you feel the same way, this was a show for you: nothing from that record.
Of course, the experience of a Madonna show isn't complete without the visuals, choreography and costumes, and here last night's show topped the American Life tour as well -- eventually.
The show began with "Future Lovers," from Confessions (with a snippet of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" tucked into the middle), and went into the lush house of the new album's "Get Together." But Madonna, dressed up in some semblance of riding gear, punctuated the songs with dancing that looked, and felt, more like we were watching her work out. The bumped-up "Like a Virgin" was more of the same -- although there was humor at work in the video projections of people falling off horses (recalling Madonna's recent mishap), her own aerobic writhing in a giant saddle was designed to be marveled at rather than enjoyed.
From there, the jump-cut philosophy that made the American Life show a weird mess took over for a while. Here's Madonna on a glitter-ball crucifix, complete with crown of thorns, singing "Live to Tell" while the video screen projects statistics on African children orphaned by AIDS. Here she is singing "Isaac" while the singer of the same name who sang on the record holds the melody and a robed dancer flings herself around a cage. Here she's singing "Jump" while film-student-level clips of urban decay flash behind her. Whatever.
The hinge of the show was "Like It or Not," another dance thumper but with a shuffle rhythm, which Madonna sang alone, with virtually no projections and nothing on stage but a black wooden chair. The song is a fairly simple declaration of independence, but the lo-tech setting gave her a chance to show sass rather than ice, and for the audience to relate rather than adore.
From there, the dance-floor fillers kept coming, and the accoutrements settled down into being impressive yet coherent recapitulations of the themes and vibes of the songs. Madonna slathered distorto-guitar onto "I Love New York" and "Ray of Light"; her dance moves were purposely ungainly during "Let It Will Be" and her banter with the audience was truly playful before the ballad "Substitute for Love," which was followed by the lovely, doleful ballad "Paradise (Not for Me)," from 2000's Music album.
By the time she did a virtual live mashup, singing the words and melody of "Music" while her band played the classic "Disco Inferno," with Madonna in a white disco suit; aped the James Brown routine of being picked up off the stage and helped into a cape (with "Dancing Queen" on it); gave even more dance thump to "Lucky Star" than the original; and finished by blazing through "Hung Up," the first single from Confessions, the rout was on. Fun won.

Confessions Tour - Village Voice Review

Crazy for You, but Not That Crazy
Madonna gives us the world, but suddenly it's not enough.
We should worship Madonna for her perpetual willingness to look, sound, and act ridiculous. For if we do, she will never disappoint us. So here we sit, our furniture, cars, and first-born bartered on Craigslist for tickets to Wednesday's opening night of her robustly scalped Madison Square Garden six-show residency. And there she hangs. In the early stages of her two-hour extravaganza/ordealafter a maudlin intro wherein interpretive dancers flail about during the solemn audio testimony of, say, a child-abuse victim or a former gangbangershe emerges crucified on a life-size sparkly cross, with a mic helpfully attached so she can croon a draggy, canned-sounding version of "Live to Tell" while surrounded by Jumbotron images of destitute, AIDS- orphaned African children who're occasionally swallowed up by CGI fireballs.
Holy shit.
This is my professional reaction. Holy shit. It's a sequence unparalleled in its combination of blasphemy, absurdity, melodrama, humanitarian grandstanding, and preposterous narcissism, all set to her second-best '80s torch ballad. ("Crazy for You," dawg.) This alone should justify the $12,000-per-seat admission. So why does it feel so unsatisfying? A Madonna concert dependably supplies (a) at least one hilariously offensive religious image, (b) a bit of Bono-bred social-cause pandering, (c) copious backup-dancer copulation, and (d) a few golden oldies to balance out the "Here's one from the new album!" hostage taking. The "Live to Tell" assault combined 'em all for maximum impact . . . to incoherent, disastrous effect. I've seen Cher in concert, folks, and I'm telling you: This was ludicrous. But somehow bad ludicrous. Incoherent, disoriented, garish, light-all-the-firecrackers-at-once-and-just-see-what-happens ludicrous. The world is an infinitely more fascinating place with Madonna in it, turning empty spectacle into sincere emotion, and trendy pop bandwagon-jumping into timeless, profound beauty. Ironically, we sincerely adore her sincere attempts at irony. But she's desensitized us to excess and lunacy merely throwing orphans, fireballs, pelvic thrusts, and crucifixion tableaux at us randomly doesn't cut it anymore. We demand a more thought-out and sophisticated brand of mindless spectacle.
Too bad. The new album in question, last year's Confessions on a Dance Floor, is a deliriously vapid disco assault, charming in its relentless doofiness. Even a dopey tune like "I Love New York"a less articulate ode to NYC than, say, Andrew W.K.'s, and man is that saying somethingcan sound transcendent if she sells it shamelessly enough. And she sure did Wednesday, thrashing haplessly on an electric guitar and climactically flipping off the thrilled, whooping crowd for a solid 20 seconds. That one stole (back) a bit of Kelly Clarkson's arena-stomping thunder, as did triumphant jazzercise single "Hung Up," though Madonna's militaristic insistence on forcing us to shout "Time goes by! Slow slowly!" over and over and over felt less like a proud declaration and more like a desperate plea to halt the aging process. With all the retro poses she's striking these daysof the show's innumerable visual motifs, the Wednesday Night Fever disco phase, fusing her 2000 electro hit "Music" to "Disco Inferno" as she struck her best John Travolta pose in a shimmery white suit, hit the hardestMadonna's eager to prove that backward is the new forward.
At 47, she remains as thin, lithe, and profoundly attractive as science (and Pilates, or whatever) will allowher outfits not too skimpy, but certainly skintightand she holds her own amid all the copious backup-dancer copulation, flailing about as they whiz by on roller skates or leap ecstatically through a maze of chain-link fences, IKEA-worthy metal office tables, and sinister-looking gymnastic equipment. She slaps one around and stands triumphant over his body as "Sorry," Dance Floor's finest hour, climaxes, but the Garden's sound system fails her, watering down its bombastic, bass-heavy melody and rendering it wan and sleepy. Occasional breakdancing interludes aside, the tunes shouldn't sound like they're bleating from a boombox.
Even the golden oldies suffered: "Like a Virgin" earned orgasmic applause upon recognition early on, but wound up saddled with the same sweeping, robo-orchestrated Stuart Price treatment as all of Dance Floor, a newfangled clumsy chord progression robbing it of its cheesy simplicity. Undaunted, Madonna cavorted on a mechanical bull saddle/stripper pole hy-brid as the Jumbotrons flashed saucy images of . . . horse-racing accidents. Like the crucifixion debacle, you could write a term paper on that moment: precocious virginal musing vs. fear of breaking a leg and getting shot, a dorky '80s pop classic ruined by 21st-century space-synth meddling, etc. But shit, man, it's Madonna. Can we have the fun along with the dumb? "Ray of Light" (with more hapless guitar thrashing) got a few fists pumping, "Erotica" benefited from more Stuart Price sleaze, the "La Isla Bonita" choreography was Tony worthy, and "Lucky Star" was, uh, "Lucky Star." Acceptable, but can you imagine a greatest-hits tour? As quietly great as Dance Floor is, will Madonna ever tour again without ramming a half-hour's worth of feeble filler trackslike the "controversial" "Isaac," embellished via Middle Eastern wailing into a very poor man's take on Enigma's "Return to Innocence"down our throats and indulge our lust for "Like a Prayer" or "Vogue" instead? How can someone so wed to outrageous decadence and shameless joy possibly not do this?
Instead, we settle for these brief flashes of old-time bravado and, even rarer, vulnerability. At one point our heroine sat down on the catwalk steps, visibly exhausted, content to merely look like an out-of-breath hot mom for a few seconds, apologizing for "fucking up words" and "falling all over the place": a quick peek at the perfectionist insecurity that drives all this grandeur. She then sang a limp "Drowned World/Substitute for Love," profoundly inferior to "Crazy for You" or even "The Power of Goodbye." She gave us everything she had, but not what we wanted.

Madonna & H&M - Promo Pictures

Madonna and her entire 150 person crew for the Confessions World Tour each found clothes that reflect their own individual styles while shopping at H&M. The international fashion retailer agreed to provide a complete wardrobe for Madonna and her 'touring family' as part of a long term agreement that includes an upcoming advertising campaign between H&M and the Material Girl.
With H&M and their world famous designers specializing in clothes for all family members, it seemed an ideal combination for the musicians, dancers, makeup artists, management and crew members of Team Madonna to have the opportunity to find exactly what they needed once they got offstage. The entire team was given the chance to choose from H&M's latest collection which included Victorian romantics, British classics and couture inspired pieces.
In addition, Madonna worked with H&M designers to create a unique track suit to wear while she's on the road. The tracksuit comes in black, white and purple. The top (€29.90) is narrow and feminine with a yoke and gathering and the trousers (€19.90) are fitted at the top with wide legs and detailed with zippers. 'We are pleased to be able to offer this track suit to our customers by mid-August' stated H&M's head of design, Margareta van den Bosch.
In H&M's upcoming advertising campaign, the dancer Sophia chose a black shiny nylon jacket with metallic press buttons teamed with loose fit jeans. Fellow dancer Cloud wore a striped and grey melange T-shirt with jeans and a matching hat. Madonna's very chic makeup artist Gina Brooke wore a black pencil skirt with a matching couture style blouse and sky high heels. Dave the Rigger chose a plain T-shirt and &denim jeans and tour production manager Chris chose a checked cotton shirt to his &denim jeans. Madonna's manager Angela Becker selected a silk camisole and black slacks under a grey melange wool vest.
H&M's autumn collection is built around four trends: mix and match for a complete look. Retro couture inspiration - chic, coordinated, romanticism with reference from the turn of the century, Classics of the classics - British style tailoring and knitwear updated in unexpected materials and color combinations, 1980's music scene - sleek rock style.
The advertising campaign is scheduled to begin in August.
