Vandals have sabotaged an enormous poster featuring Madonna by appearing to make her weep.
They targeted the 250 sq ft image advertising her new range for fashion store H&M by daubing the poster with green paint.
The culprits climbed the scaffolding to which the mesh advertising banner was attached, cut a hole in one of the eyes and poured paint through.
The poster, featuring two images of the 48-year-old superstar, is being replaced today at a cost of around £6,000.
The attack, near Old Street roundabout in Shoreditch, is believed to have taken place on Monday night or early on Tuesday.
Nobody has owned up yet, but Madonna has recently been criticised by anti-fur campaigners for wearing a coat made of chinchilla skins.
Sales of her new range for H&M are believed to be below expectations, despite huge advertising.
Malcolm Brasseur, managing director of BlowUp Media, which produced the poster, said the vandalism was “disappointing.”?
A spokesman for H&M said: “We are looking into this, to see how it has happened.”?

Her Madgesty’s new “M by Madonna” clothing line for H&M has sold more than $15 million since going on sale just over a week ago.

This year has been quite lucrative for Madonna.
In addition to the $8 million she collected from H&M, the Queen of Pop was also paid $15 Million for her recent Japanese commercial.
Madge has spent the last three weeks in a recording studio and has promised her label a new album by November!

Madonna is dedicating her new children’s book to her adopted son.
The pop superstar – who has written a number of children’s stories – is said to be drawing on her experiences with Malawian tot David Banda, who she was granted custody of last October, for her next tale.
A source said: “She adores David and wants to honour him by writing a boys’ adventure with a moral lesson.”
Madonna, 48, is believed to be keen to make sure the book has a Kabbalahist moral message in line with her beliefs. The faith is an offshoot of Judaism, and the singer and her husband Guy Ritchie are both devout followers.
It is not the first time Madonna has written a book inspired by one of her children.
The star’s first story, ‘The English Roses’, dealt with peer pressure among girls, and was based on her experiences with her daughter Lourdes.

Madonna is set to star in the big finale of the Ricky Gervais show Extras.
He is writing a special last episode to end the hit comedy just like he did with The Office. And a deal with the BBC and US network HBO to make her Madgesty the show’s main star is nearly complete.
Madonna and Ricky are in constant email contact discussing her role. He is keen for for her to be his character Andy Millman’s nemesis.
Andy rose from an extra to getting his own TV series and becoming a celebrity but a run-in with the Queen Of Showbiz Madonna could bring him down.
The couple have been trying to work together since they met at Live8 in 2005 but tour commitments prevented Madonna appearing in the last Extras series.
David Bowie, Robert De Niro and Chris Martin are among the stars Ricky has lured on the show.
