Pop superstar Madonna has dismissed controversy over her recent London concert – insisting the late start was within the venue’s guidelines.
The holiday hitmaker was due to begin her show at the city’s Wembley Stadium on Thursday at 8:30pm, but she didn’t launch into her first song until 9:10pm, meaning the two-hour event ran late.
Madonna now reportedly faces a fine from the venue, as artists are given a 10:30pm curfew to help local public transport systems cope with the large numbers of concert-goers all exiting at the same time.
Last year British singer George Michael was fined $240,000 when his Wembley gig over-ran by 13 minutes.
But a spokesperson for the star insists that the rules are not binding, telling British publication The London Paper, “Stage times are only guidelines.”
The singer has also come under fire for the poor sound quality at the gig, with many fans complaining that they could not hear most of their favourite songs.
But the representative insists there was nothing wrong with the equipment, saying, “I was at the gig and the sound was fine.”
Madonna’s Sticky + Sweet tour concludes in Sao Paulo, Brazil on December 21st.

we were just at the madonna concert at minute maid park in houston. she was 2 hours late starting – sound quality was really poor – audience was very hacked off!
Um, where have you been? Madonna ALWAYS starts her concerts late. I always just enjoy the other Madonna fans in the audience, because they are always so fun.
Relax already!
I find it very strange that Madonna, who is supposed to be the ultimate control freak and who absolutely abhors lateness, has been so late starting her concerts…what’s the problem??? She has no right to treat her fans that way, considering how much they’re paying for seats – it’s almost highway robbery. She needs to start thinking about the common people and not her celebrity friends or which orphan she can adopt next.
For Madonna’s team and Live Nation to not apologise to the fans who couldn’t hear or see at Wembley is atrocious.
An artist of Madonna’s stature should have every section checked for audibility during sound check. When the concert is planned the view for every customer in a massive stadium needs to be considered.
This was a disgusting rip off. Madonna brought Arena size equipment to a stadium! Completely unprofessional. To say the buck does not stop with her is wrong. She gains the most profit from these concerts.
Just remember Madonna that you lost MANY MANY fans that night.
I was standing, close to the photographs area and the sound was effectively very bad. Anyway, We are all fans, but paying gbp 75 for what I got was not worth it. And queen of pop or not, She has to be on time, That’s the only thing she has to do for 4 months, focus on her show… so be on time. It’s not a question of royalty, it’s a question of respect toward people waiting for 3 hours standing… M if you read…. behave….
I was at Cardiff and London. Both times I was in the top whack price bracket seats so the view was great. However, there was definitely a difference in sound quality. I do wonder if that’s because Cardiff’s stadium has a roof and Wembley is open air? I’m guessing the accoustics can’t be as good. It seemed ‘quieter’ at the Wembley gig somehow, even from where I was sitting.
Also, I had a friend who was in not quite so good seats and she said she could barely hear a thing. I feel really sorry for fans who couldn’t hear properly.
Also, just because we all love Madonna doesn’t mean we should be happy with crappy sound and blocked sight lines. If you feel cheated, I’d complain to Live Nation.
I was in the Gold cirkle ( Hot ticket ) so I wouldn
yeah Im sure the sound was perfect for some people, but based on the amount of reports that state a lot of fans complained – and the number of people on the boards confirming, clearly there was a sound issue for a whole chunk of the audience.
The sound was barely criticized at the other venues so I’d be inclined to think someone fucked up this time.
I’d be pissed as well if I paid that money and got shit sound. Can’t listen to the music if its bouncing of the stands because some positioned the speakers wrong, or the levels were not balanced properly.
I appreaciate everyone who says the sound was great and they could see…but don t say some people are hard to please because you havent been around the stadium to see what the conditions were like for others. we cant forgive everything because its madonna and let it go. at the end of the day it was the engeeners fault. but there were major faults..i couldnt see or hear anything. i been called a hater by some for saying this. how can i be a hater when i paid $300 for my ticket? but i dont think i ask too much when i want to be able to hear the music at a music concert
we was in gold circle was great
The show was perfect, the public wonderful and the sound excellent. This was also very very emotional. One of Madonna’s best performance.
i was there thursday night & i thought it was brilliant & she sounded great, her energy levels was fantastic
some people are hard to please.xx
i know she would be on late, she has never come on on time..i mean its madonna what do you expect?? she is the queen of pop dont forget.xxx
I was there and it wasn’t the sound that was bad it was Madonnas singing. The performance was very disappointing and lacklustre. The stage was badly designed so a third of the audience couldnt see it properly and those third would have all paid premium prices. After yesterday I’m not sure I’ll ever bother going to see her again.
I was at Wembley – the sound was fantastic!
i was at the gig..and the sound was horrible.. her spokesperson didnt go around to hear how it sounds in every part of the stadium…we are all fans..but i didnt hear a thing..i cant just shut up and say the concert was amazing
What kill-joys Brent Council are. I don’t live too far from the Stadium and I thought the sound was great.
