Madonna has made a cardinal sin. At least, to hear one cardinal tell it, she has.

In advance of tonight’s concert in Santiago, the first of her two sold-out shows in the Chilean capital, the Material Divorcée has been called out by one of the region’s most prominent religious leaders for more or less corrupting the minds—and loins—of the nation.

“This woman comes here and, in an incredibly shameless manner, she provokes a crazy enthusiasm, an enthusiasm of lust, lustful thoughts, impure thoughts,” retired Roman Catholic Cardinal Jorge Medina said.

Meanwhile, Madonna and her minions seem unfazed—roughly 60,000 fans are expected at each of her concerts this week at Santiago’s National Stadium.

No word if A-Rod is among them.

Madonna, always in fighting shape, has won a round against the British press.
The pop star won a judgment Monday against a British tabloid that she accused of breaching her privacy and copyright by publishing pictures of her 2000 wedding.
Madonna, who says the pictures were stolen by an interior decorator from her home in Beverly Hills, California, is seeking damages in excess of 5 million pounds ($7.5 million) from the publishers of the Mail on Sunday newspaper.
Judge David Eady entered a judgment in her favor but deferred a decision on compensation until the new year.
Madonna and film director Guy Ritchie, who recently gained a preliminary divorce decree, were married at a Scottish castle on Dec. 22, 2000.
No pictures of the event had been published until they appeared Oct. 19 in the Mail on Sunday, said Matthew Nicklin, a lawyer representing Madonna. The newspaper published 11 photographs over the front page and a double-page inside spread.
“She was ambushed, for the simple reason that if the Mail on Sunday had told her what they intended to do, the claimant would have sought and obtained an injunction,” Nicklin said.

Even off duty, the woman cannot help but pose. Backstage photographs from fashion shoots usually show a celebrity or model in their natural, ungilded state.

Judging from a picture of Madonna by the fashion photographer Steven Meisel, during the shoot for next season’s Louis Vuitton advertising campaign, her instinctive state is to placate the camera.

Even when being fitted by Vuitton’s creative director, the heavily tattooed Marc Jacobs, in a tented-off dressing room, she puts her hands on her waist and a sway in her hip. She probably vogues as she makes her children’s porridge in the morning.

Under Jacob’s aegis, Louis Vuitton has featured a slew of unlikely celebrities in its various campaigns, including Keith Richards, Sean Connery, Andre Agassi and even Mikhail Gorbachev.

Celebrities in fashion adverts are now almost commonplace, but the collaboration between Madonna and Vuitton has sparked a huge amount of fizzing ever since it was announced. She has previously appeared in adverts for Gap, for her own collection for H&M and for Versace but has tended to avoid being allied with a single fashion label recently.

You Must Love Me / Don’t Cry For Me Argentina (Buenos Aires, Dec 04)

While speaking to PEOPLE about his latest charitable efforts, Yankees star Alex Rodriguez commented for the first time on his relationship with Madonna.

“We’re friends,” Rodriguez, 33, says.

Asked if there is any romance between them at all, Rodriguez reiterates, “We’re friends – that’s it.”

While rumors have swirled that the slugger and the singer, 50, have been carrying on a romantic relationship and flying around the country in order to spend time together, “I can tell you this,” Rodriguez says, “I have never been on a plane with her.”

He also finds much of what’s been written about them laughable: “I’ve been to two [of her] concerts, yet I’ve read that I went to 20. I’ve also read that we were buying an apartment together. That is absolutely ridiculous and not true.”

“You have to have a sense of humor when it comes to this stuff,” Rodriguez adds.

When pressed on how much time they have spent together, and whether he had ever stayed the night at Madonna’s home, Rodriguez laughed: “If I answered every rumor we’d be here for three weeks.”

(A source close to Rodriguez tells PEOPLE that reports of his spending the night with Madonna are “completely, unequivocably false.”)

Further to this morning’s announcement regarding the rescheduling of the Buenos Aires performances, Madonna personally sends this message to her fans.

“I am so disappointed that I had to cancel my show tonight. I’ve been so looking forward to these four shows in Argentina. When I found out my stage was not going to arrive due to plane delays, I started to cry. Fortunately I am able to make up the show and I am very sorry for any inconvenience I may have caused anyone. I look forward to seeing you all at River Plate Stadium tomorrow night and this weekend.” Love, Madonna
