Comedian Sacha Baron Cohen failed to charm the star-studded audience at the Golden Globes on Sunday – he drew a round of boos after mocking Madonna’s divorce from director husband Guy Ritchie.
The controversial funnyman stepped onstage to present the Best Comedy award to Woody Allen’s Vicky Christina Barcelona at the Beverly Hills event.
He tried to humour the celebrity-packed crowd with jokes about the current global economic crisis and its effects on Hollywood – including one-liners about Victoria Beckham and Charlie Sheen.
But he received jeers after claiming Madonna had fired her “personal assistant” Ritchie due to the recession.
He told the unamused audience, “Madonna has had to get rid of one of her personal assistants. Our heart goes out to you, Guy Ritchie.”
The attack may come as a shock to the pop superstar – Cohen starred alongside the singer in the promo for her 2000 hit Music.

Well, I hope it was a more directed toward Guy. And yes,
everyone needs to lighten up, since it’s comedy, for cryng out loud.
But I will say that I heard in his new movie ‘Bruno’ he goes to Africa to adopt a black baby, so he can carry it around as an accessory… I think he’s getting a little too personal, taking pot shots at ‘M’. I mean, after all, she is responsible for helping him get his start in the U.S. I’m sure she’s taking it
like a good sport (if she’s even heard about it) but let’s hope he stops here.
And to the other posters, there were a few boos and mostly disapproving groans, but NO ONE applauded or laughed at it. And Sting and Trudie were there
(who are good friends of M and Guy) and I’m sure they weren’t very pleased. Overall it was in bad taste, but when

I’d hardly say they booed–they were perhaps a bit scandalized and nonplussed–but they didn’t boo. The only joke that I thought worked was the Benj. Button one.
