Australian actor Hugh Jackman has come out in support of pop queen Madonna after her bid to adopt an African girl failed.
The 40-year-old star, who himself has two adopted kids Oscar, eight, and three-year-old Ava, said he is sickened by cynics who favoured an African judges decision to reject Madges bid to adopt four-year-old baby girl Mercy James earlier this month.
I challenge anyone who thinks you adopt a kid for a publicity stunt, the Sun quoted Jackman as saying.
Anyone parent knows that would have to be the most intensive publicity stunt in the world. I am sure she is coming from a good place, he added.
The X-men star admits that he can understand the Material Girls desire to adopt as he and wife Deborra-Lees wish to adopt a child from Asia or Africa was crushed under stringent Aussie rules.
The adoption laws in Australia are too restrictive. Of course, checks need to be made. But they had a very negative approach, Jackman said.
It was like they were trying to discourage you.
There are 130million orphans in the world who is looking after them? If you are a citizen of the world, on some level they are all our responsibility.
And if you have got parents who want to adopt and there are children who need a home, it seems like a no-brainer.
There are not that many children in Australia who need adopting, so we looked internationally and that is what is difficult, he added.

James Kambewa, 24, the surviving parent of a 3-year-old Malawi girl named Mercy whom Madonna is trying to adopt, is demanding full custody.
And he says he wants to spare his child from a life of “scandal” in the house of a Material Mom he claims lacks “good morals,” Britain’s Daily Mail reported last night.
Kambewa, 24, a security guard who’s never met Mercy, is seeking a permanent injunction against Madonna.
“She is my daughter; she is my blood; she needs parental love,” the newspaper quoted him as saying. “She lost one parent, yes, but I am still alive and so she is not an orphan.”
Besides, Kambewa claimed, “I don’t think Madonna is a model mum. I have seen her in movies of her songs. She doesn’t portray good morals.”
Referring to Madonna’s handsome boy toy, model Jesus Luz, Kambewa said:
“That’s scandalous. How can a normal woman fall for a boy who can as well be her son? No, spare my Mercy that scandal,” he told the newspaper.
A court has already denied Madonna, 50, the chance to adopt Mercy. She hopes to overturn the ruling at an appeal Monday.

Since then, Madonna has kept her horses at pal Steven Klein’s residence, where photographers snapped her when she fell from her horse three weeks ago.
Meanwhile, Hamptons sources say the Material Mom is still house-hunting out East as well as in Westchester’s Bedford.
“She is officially moving back to New York and not going back to London, where [ex-husband] Guy Ritchie lives,” our insider said. “Not her.”
A rep for the singer said, “Madonna never had any discussion nor were demands made regarding her storing horses there. There is no 10-page list of demands. None of that is true.
