Madonna is not only a singer/songwriter, she’s also a performance artist. She excels as a performance artist and that’s what has kept her in the public eye for so many years. She manages to do what no other musical artist seems to be able to do – intrigue us and keep us interested, even if we’re not happy with what she’s currently doing. She’s a mystery, wrapped in an enigma. Bottom line: She’s not boring!

Shas has always been underrated by critics but not the record-buying public. Just when she gained respect from her peers around the time of “Ray of Light,” she started making sucky, forgettable music (starting with “American Life”) and now she deals in total crap tunes. But, overrated? No way. As a performer, she deserves every bit of the success she has. I think she’s overrated as a human being. The woman is a bitch who would spit on any one of us…I’m sure we’ve all seen and read the accounts of people who’ve encounterd her. I’m happy for her success but what good is it if she’s still a total cow? Give me Dolly Parton any day!

Scott – your opinion of Madonna as a human being and “bitch” is unfair. The truth of the matter is no one except those in her inner circle really knows what type of person she is. I think that she is definitely a aggressive type A personality which lends itself to her success and is also why some call her a bitch etc. etc…..but there is also a human side to her. At the end of the day, in certain situations, be it business world, at home, with friends, with family we all have different sides of personality.
I understand what you’re saying, Mike, but I’m not referring to her business savvy. I think she’s a brilliant, shrewd businesswoman and that’s great but it’s common knowledge how horrible she is in real life. There are so many paparazzi videos attesting to how she treats people and I’ve seen it for myself as well. I referred to Dolly Parton because she’s always gracious and pleasant to even the most obnoxious fans. Again, I’m not referring to Madonna’s tough-as-nails business sense because, as you said, it’s part of what has gotten her where she is and allowed her to stay there for so long. For a lot of reasons – I suppose her tendency for reinvention makes her much more diverse musically than just about every other mainstream pop artist, but at the same time her career’s much harder to evaluate. The public has a depressingly short memory.
