A French worker, 53, was killed and two of those hurt, a Briton and a US citizen, were seriously injured.
Fire-fighters said the accident occurred when the roof of the stage became unbalanced as it was being lifted by four cranes, toppling one of the cranes which crashed on to the structure below.
About 50 people from a range of nationalities were working to set up the structure, city sports official Richard Miron said.
Up to a dozen people are believed to have been underneath the stage when the accident occurred at around 1715 (1515 GMT).
The roof “started shaking and collapsing” gradually, said Marseille city councillor Maurice Di Nocera.
“Since it did not collapse right away, that allowed several people to get out, to avoid being hit,” he said.

I really don’t know why shit happens for that stage roof!
It all started with the LA show; the first time that roof had some sort of malfunction.
I really feel terribly sad for the people that french man left behind. Like Madonna, my heart goes out to them. SOOO SAD.
How come these tragedies only happen now? In Confessions Tour, when she had to do stadium shows, she had that same roof, in which the disco ball was in the same position as the circular screens….and it never collapsed! Oh well, maybe because the roof is always used due to multiple STADIUM shows…Confessions had multiple ARENA shows, so the roof was used way less often.
Who cares about the cancel shows I think someone should tell madonna this is not a good idea she should just not have that round big screen on top of the roof it’s dangerous. we already lost michael we don’t want to loose madonna please just take that off the show for your safety please
i think the tour dates are going to get all screwed up..expect more cancellations.
this happens becuase of rushing to put up such complex heavy equipemnt in such a short period of time…..I should now, I have posted other such like tragedies on my tours on my MySpace page.

They should just reschedule the show for a later date
