guess they missed Jessica Simpson’s
cover of Berlin’s “Take MY Breath Away”
Pariah Carey’s joke of the great Def Leppard
song “Bringing On The Heartache”
and whoever just did a cover of Blue Oyster Cult’s
“I’m Burning For You” which is currently in some car commercial
crap.

has not toured there in well over 15 years…?

The cover was gorgeous and she brought something new and exciting to a wonderful old classic. I have so much respect for Don for praising and giving Madonna credit for the cover. A true gentleman.
I know the both songs , and it’s totally clear that Madonna’s version is very cool & really amazing , she could give us a new sense of peace in her voice .. & the video is immortal to me

Much respect to the man. He was incredibly grateful and gracious, a true gentleman. If only others were like him.
Like it or not, Don McLean himself praised the cover, saying it was “a gift from a goddess”, and that her version is “mystical and sensual”!
It’s ROYALTIES (the compensation an artist receives for the use of their published work) not loyalties.
Madonna is God, but should never cover others songs…especially classics like “American Pie”. Madonna herself is not fond of this cover and seems to have forgotten its existence altogether.

The truth is, Don McLean was totally right – the verses and musical style changed the original meaning into something totally different. And that’s the sign of a GOOD cover – what would’ve been the point if she did the exact same arrangement?
All I can say is, certain classic rockers probably just have something against electronic pop no matter how well it’s done.

I agree about the diferent arragement, and no way it’s the worst cover song, no way.
