Madonna’s “Celebration” (Warner Bros.) overtakes Muse’s “The Resistance” (Helium 3/Warner Music) to debut at the top of Billboard’s European Top 100 Albums survey. There’s a fourth week as the European Hot 100 Singles No. 1 for “Sexy Chick” (Gum/Positiva/Virgin/EMI) by David Guetta featuring Akon.
The “Celebration” retrospective is new at No. 1 in the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Ireland and Denmark, No. 2 in Spain, Portugal and Finland, No. 3 in Switzerland, No. 4 in Austria and No. 5 in Norway. The compilation’s 77,000 first-week U.K. sales give Madonna her 11th No. 1 album there (including 1996’s “Evita” soundtrack). That draws her level with Elvis Presley with the most U.K. chart-toppers of any solo artist, only behind the Beatles’ best total for any artist of 15.

“Let me tell you something, as far as I am concerned the Beatles never ever measured up to Madonna. They were very overrated, when they came out they had little competition.”
Excuse me, but do you even know anything about music? Obviously not. The Beatles may not be your cup of tea, and that’s fine, but they had no competition back in the 60s? Ever heard of the British Invasion? The Rolling Stones? Dave Clark Five? The Hollies? The Animals? Not to mention the American sounds of the Beach Boys, the Motown sound going on, Elvis was still kicking it, and you had everything going on in the 60s from rockabilly to Stax soul, from surf music to psychedelic rock. There was a lot of diversity, my friend. It doesn’t take much energy to explore some of that music back then, or even pick up a book about rock history if you’re not that inclined to listen to that stuff. A lot of records were also released on independent and start-up labels long before labels became incorporated by greedy record companies.
As far as the Beatles being overrated, maybe in your opinion, which is obviously in the minority. The Beatles were only together for less than a decade, yet have accomplished more than what most artists have in a lifetime. They have helped change the way music is recorded and produced. Many of their albums were technologically advanced for their time and still hold up today. Every artist today, including Madonna, wants to make their own “Sgt Peppers” or White Album–the ultimate, definitive artist album that shows the artist at their most creative peak.
Their sound is still heard in groups today such as Coldplay, Keane, Muse, among others. That is why the recent releases of their remastered CDs are dominating charts around the world. Their music is being listened to by kids whose parents weren’t even alive when the Beatles were famous. In the US alone, their back catalog has overtaken Michael Jackson’s domination of the catalog charts, and the only reason why he was even on it was because he died. Do you think Madonna’s back catalog will create that kind of sensation if they’re remastered and re-released?
The Beatles can’t measure up to Madonna because there’s no comparison. It has taken her 27 years to accomplish what they did in eight, and she still hasn’t broken all of their records. Don’t get me wrong–I like Madonna; otherwise I wouldn’t be on this site. But it’s hard to appreciate her when her fans are constantly ripping apart other artists just to make her look good. It’s bad enough with the constant Mariah Carey comparisons (even though they’re hardly similar), but now you are all going after everyone from Lady Gaga to Micheal Jackson, Prince, Elvis, and even the Beatles.
will she me cry when i stumble and fall?
does she hear my voice in the night when i call
wipe away all the tears, it’s gonna be alright.
I fought to be so strong i guess you knew i was afraid
you’d go away too….
- Promis to try
I learn to let go of the illusion that we can possess
i learn to let go and travel in stillness
and i’ll remember, hapinness
i remember love…..
- I’ll remember
oh, Father
you never wanted to live that way
if never wanted to hurt me
why am I running away?
- Oh, Father
(sigh) some songs that i just hold on til her Majesty does another
heartbreaking lovesong (and not just crappy songs like what that Mariah lame does so boring)
Guys. do you think with Live Nation can they revive Madonna’s music in the US Charts? Well I hop they’d revive the POP music which I miss so much from her Madgesty. I mean I miss her heartbreaking bllads, the last i can recall is “I’ll Remember”. She’s very good with Lovesongs. I hope Madge can read this. and I hope she can work on another MAsterpiece like “True Blue” album or
the “Like a Prayer” album cause those dominate all.
I miss the “old 80’s Madonna”. It’s one reason i became a huge fan.
Yes Rfan , you’re partially right, but it’s also true that US sales are wider than any other country, and some stars get bigger when they break through there: Leona Lewis, Lady Gaga(even though she’s american she began to have some success outside the US first), The Black Eyed Peas, Dido, Amy Winehouse, etc. But, as you said it’s not everything in the World. Madonna has always make it wonderfully outside the USA. Unlike lots of artists who originally began being worldwide success but now have been basically USA Market artists. Madonna on the other hand, has always been a Worldwide success and the numbers from the US, although have dramatically diminished in the last years, form a small portion of her total sales: Hard Candy sold nearly 700,000 in the US and over 2′700,000 worldwide, compared to ,for instance let’s say: Mariah Carey(who fell into the US Market artist). Her last work sold around 1′200,000 in the US and around 700,000 worldwide. Madonna sold outside the US nearly 4 times what Mariah did, meanwhile Mariah sold in the US 3 quarters more than Madonna. And if we look back to their previous works, both ladies sold around 9′000,000 (Confessions…and The Emancipation…), but Mariah sold 6 million in the US and Madonna 2 Million; and outside the US Mariah sold 3 million and Madonna 7.And it’s funny about these two albums: Both sold 9′000,000 and both had a song that spent long term at Number 1, Mariah spent 14 weeks at number one in the US Billboard Hot 100 with We belong Together, and Madonna spent 15 weeks at number one in the Global Chart(worldwide chart)with Hung Up, so even then we can see how worldwide Madonna is, has been and will continue being.
Guys, don’t be upset about Celebration – guess that’s the reason why Madonna quit in the end. After American Life, they were just too concerned about not selling anything in the States anymore. But be honest, who needs the US in today’s music business; there is Europe, there is rising Latin America and there is big Asia/Japan. Rather be successful there that in being dependent on the US where some big radio stations have that much of an influence that they can determine who’s in the charts and who’s not!! Imagine, 4 Minutes has been the best selling song of all times for Madonna in her career – even more than Vogue; and what did it do: made it 2 weeks to number 3 of the Top 100 after selling 2.5 mio copies. So fuck Warner, fuck the US and Madonna, don’t get washed away from wishy-washy Americans – Europe has been always good to you, dont forget this – Celebration hit number 1 in Europe, and NOT in the US.
There’s just something wrong with the numbers for Celebration’s first week sales in the global Chart.
It says 189,000 copies but how come that be? I mean, just between the Uk, Germany, Italy and France she crushes around 170,000… and to think she only sold 19,000 in the rest of the world?(except the usa, japan and canada which sales report will count for the second week). It’s pretty nuts. I heard she sold very well in countries like Brazil, Argentina in México in South America and also did very well in other parts of the world. This it’s pretty weird and nuts indeed.
I think this happens because lots of countries report their sales in different dates. For instance Billboard reports every tuesday to wednesday, the Uk every sunday to monday, the global chart every thursday and so and so…also the release of the album ha different dates for different countries so that it creates a total chaos lol .
For those people who don’t know the diversity and talents within the European music scene here is an example what Europe has to offer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdSVO8q5KWo&feature=related
“Milow is the alias of Belgian singer/songwriter Jonathan Vandenbroeck, who broke through to national mainstream success in 2007 with the number three hit single “You Don’t Know.” Born on July 14, 1981, Vandenbroeck made his full-length album debut in 2006 with The Bigger Picture on Homerun Records. Produced by Nigel Powell, the album spawned a series of singles, namely “One of It,” “Excuse to Try,” “Landslide,” and “You Don’t Know.” The latter was re-recorded with producer Jo Francken for an EP release in 2007, along with a couple live acoustic tracks and a live cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Thunder Road.” Unlike any of the other singles to have emerged from The Bigger Picture, “You Don’t Know (The Single Version)” became a major hit, climbing all the way to number three on the Belgian singles chart and charting in the Netherlands as well. The Bigger Picture, reissued with the new version of “You Don’t Know” appended as a bonus track, in turn became a Top Ten hit on the Belgian albums chart. Also in 2007 Vandenbroeck was honored with a TMF Award for Best New Artist. His follow-up album, Coming of Age (2008) — produced by Francken, whom he had worked with so successfully on “You Don’t Know (The Single Version)” — proved very popular, topping the Belgian albums chart; moreover, its lead single, “Dreamers and Renegades,” was a Top 30 hit. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide”

There is life beyond the US borders and the US airplay.
nice music! certainly better than elton john or the cheesy french pop dance stuff that makes me wanna kill myself.
If you dig deep enough, you will find many great French musicians.
The clubs in Europe are the place to be. In America, only NY has or had that kind of exciting melting pots.
ummm the crap i heard from france is god awful, with the exception of the more intelectual and experimental stuff like mirwais.
If you want to hear great Music, the mainstream radio is the last place to listen to. I turned off the radio long time ago and have switched the channels when they turned on Madonna in 2003 with American life. Thank goodness for U Tube. At least now, I get to watch and listen to my favorite music and the new songs anytime I want. I do not have to put up with all that reality and garbage subjects on MTV.
I miss the old MTV, when we used to get a wide and diverse taste of music and videos, when a Madonna song got a simultaneous international release. Nowadays, by the time the full version comes is ready, there are 30 other versions to choose from. It is confusing even for die-hard Madonna fans.
What I like about the clubs is its immediacy, if a record works on the club floor, nothing can stop it from spreading. Club fans don’t like the things that become too pop. Perhaps that is why Madonna’s records do great in the club scene. Madonna’s biggest records always had an unpopular edge/ controversial side to them. Whitney and MJ were the pop ones. Madonna was the MaDjestic one. She is loved by many and hated by others at the same time. Ultimately that worked to her advantage. Because she didn’t have to bother with doing things in order to remain “in”. She opted for being “out” outstanding.
The look of the celebration video is just like Milan high fashion quick and millanistic, combination of short cut and standing high. The fan version is funnier. However, the song itself is a cool and care free song.
With all that war and economic bad news, there is no better way of setting yourself free for a while than going to a club and dancing the night away. Who knows you might even be in for a nice ride (experience)
couldn’t have said it better. clubs are where its at. and i don’t even drink. think about it. does it matter?
Let me tell you something, as far as I am concerned the Beatles never ever measured up to Madonna. They were very overrated, when they came out they had little competition. Don’t even bother comparing them to Madonna, because even the bubble gum songs of Madonna (that is if she ever had any) are far more uplifting, inspiring, meaningful, creative, ambiguous, expressive, stylistic and fabulous. The neither the Beatles nor for that matter anybody else could reach to Madonna’s league.
Madonna defined and redefined the culture, MJ might have been the king of pop, but Madonna is the queen of universe. Whatever you may or may not find of her and her work, you still think and talk about her.
So, to haters: take your hats with respect anytime you see even a picture of Madonna and bow to her madjesty, because in fact she rules over you more even more than her fans. That is because we are with her. Her work says something that we (most of her fans) like, support and stand for.
You guys can keep trashing her if you want, like you always have, but to us Madonna is a cultural and political institution, far more than the usual king, queens and the presidents.
I have had many different Madonna mixes and remixes, so it is difficult for to say which one I like the best. But this Collection is still far above and beyond any one single artist ever managed to produce. MJ had only two great albums in the 80’s, Madonna had 5. In the 90’s MJ had one good record, Madonna had 4 great studio albums, two mega collections and two good soundtracks. This decade she has produced 4 international number 1 albums shown great diver city and has had three sellout tours. MJ had none.
The Beatles came from a generation when many of the influential people in the media and music business also came from. That is why they praised their music so much. Madonna on the other hand had to go up against a large number of established musicians. She managed to overtake them all and rule them all too. Everyone who is anyone has an opinion of Madonna. Even the worse opinion is a testament of her artistic and cultural power.
I don’t even bother going on Mariah site let alone review her work. But what amazes me is how the haters study Madonna’s work to the smallest details. That is the proof of her power over them.
Excuse me, this decade, she has had four record breaking tours. How many town halls has Mariah been able to fill lately?
When was the last time Mariah or Whitney had an international top 5 record let alone an international number 1?
yes, all thats true. but the record itself is pure trash. those edits and mixes and sounds are god awful. it trashes her legacy. warner messed up. it’s obvious that Madonna wanted nothing to do with it. i love the Benasi version of celebration and both videos for the song are awesome.
There is no such a thing “ a perfect mix”. Never has been. That is why they have the remix and there is always tomorrow.
This collection is a relatively speaking tidy closing tribute to three decades of great music, without making the original albums obsolete. I think they have done a good job of it too. As a fan who has all of Madonna’s studio albums and three collection CDs. I find this double CD set a great collection to have, because aside from a great standout cover, it covers all Madonna eras without making the original albums obsolete.
For the people who missed out on Madonna during the past three decades this is a must have CD set; For the collectors, it is a must have because of its historical value; For the fans because of two moody new songs, the art work on the cover and the celebratory nature of the package as a whole.
American Life was absent from the CD and DVD. Enough reasons to hate the collection.
i guess you are not a fan..that’s ok.
if you were a fan you wouldn’t say this.
The haters would hate Madonna anyway. But we fans don’t care about what the haters think, we never did.
Madonna fans don’t like to be preached to by the haters.
This is called Sabotage…by who? WARNER! Fuck off you assholes! thank God she’s got rid of them bitches!
I have all kinds of self made Madonna collections. She has so many great songs that is just impossible to put them all in one place and in one mix. Having said that.
This is and will remain the greatest collection record of all time. No artist could top this, not even the Beatles or MJ. They never had such a rich volume, such diversity and such aura about them. I have not bought the DVD yet, but I am hoping to get it as a gift for Christmas. If nobody gives it to me then I will buy it myself. Something else that I like about this collection is the mix. Some songs are ultra re-masterd and others are more like the original. All in all the de sound as well as the CD Cover just shine.
THIS IS MADONNA, the GREATEST Expressionist, Musical and Cultural Visionary EVER.
Dress you Up and Lucky Star sound fantastic. All the other songs too.
Um, have you heard some of the awful sloppy edits? EROTICA has a worse edit than the GHV2 version. Read my post below. This project lacked a good creative director and a producer with good ears. Some songs are wonderful, some are horrid. This sort of treatment did not happen on the IMMACULATE and I once thought GHV2 was awful edits until this mess!
agreed. this is her worst ever release. the post above is all true as a very good idea of a hits collection but the actual product never came. we got a bunch of garbage. at least the filth and wisdom release is fantastic.
i love all the heart and soul and beautiful writing for the you can dance release. wonderful production to. Also something to remember was amazing as well.
And they never even wrote anything inside the booklet celebrating her career. Plus song years are missing too. Its just bad.
When I hear this disc I also feel like some important tracks are missing. They could have put 20 songs on each disc and added “Deeper & Deeper”, Give It 2Me”, You Must Love Me” and “I’ll Remember”. “Miles Away” could be cut.
And khosrow, you are on crack when you say the Beatles couldn’t top this collection. She has more bubble gum in her career than the Beatles ever did.
I am not happy with this compilation at all. It is put together very sloppy. The edits are horrid! EXPRESS YOURSELF was slaughtered, DON’T TELL ME just shuts off at the end right before the orchestra. Couldn’t they at least fade the damn ending out??? And listen the the worst edit of them all in EROTICA during the middle, 3:17 – 3:30. AWFUL.
We love her. Madonna rules.
Just watched madonna’s new dvd collection andI am very disapointed. I won’t mention all the vidoes that are missing as that has been covered. My problems with this release:
cheap dvd case (aramay one)
it’s only NTSC encoded and region 0
single layer disc so all the videos are compressed
PICTURE QUALITY – OH MY GOD so bad, some are ok but I want you was the worst. ghost image of madonna. This was particulary upsetting as the sticker says they are all remastered
Icon version of get together, prefered the orginal myself. This version was orginally 16:9 format but has been squeezed into a 4:3 aspect
Sorry was originally 4:3 and had been compressed into a 16:9 ratio (I have the japanese tour edtion of confessions album and thankfully has orginal aspect and is better quality)
lastly … no bonus features!!!!!!
a poor release from warner
Totally agree with you MFAN. I received mine yesterday and I was pretty disappointed!!! I got really pissed off when I watched Justify My Love and I saw that black thingy covering the girl nipples!!! Censorship?
Second, like you said no bonus features, nothing!!!
But what to expect from Warner!! Warner is known from NOT invest much money on their DVDs releases!! It is a company that only wants to make money money money and they don’t give nothing in return!!
Madonna took way too long to leave this s@it record company!!! Argh!!!
what the hell is with the censoring of the erotica video and the justify my love video. even mtv will play the titties.
go madonnna go madonna !!! she the top female singer in the world.
Yah, I agree. Hail the queen.
