29. Confessions on a Dancefloor – Madonna (Maverick, 2005)
Anointing Stuart “Les Rythmes Digitales” Price as her voguish producer du jour, Madge approaches her sixth decade with the slinky chutzpah of a 19-year-old club kitten. From the Abba-sampling Hung Up to the turbo-charged feminist floorfiller Jump, this is her best album since True Blue.

If they are lucky, other artists manage to create one of two good albums in their entire careers.
Madonna has had 11 fantastic full-length studio albums with hits as well as great b-sides covering three decades. You can never put all of Madonna greats on one collection. Her latest double disc collection gives a good overview of her career. However, thank god it does not cover everything. Some things are still left on the original albums. Uplifting Nothing really matters, Funky Beat Goes On, Dark I want You, immaculate Paradise not for me, American life,,,,,
There is only one Madonna.
Not to mention, The Look of Love, Bye Bye Baby, Inside of Me, Theif of Hearts,
Long before Mariah released a relatively credible song (her best to date) ‘the roof’, Madonna made Erotica album and the song ‘where life begins’, which is a true dark masterpiece. I think all Madonna albums are educational in a fun way. Before Erotica, nobody knew that toe sucking was actually very stimulating. And if anyone did know, he or she would not dare to talk about it. While in those days MJ was singing ‘keep it in the closet’, Madonna insisted on transparency and throwing wide open the borderlines.
To me, true emancipation began with Madonna.
Nowadays Riahana tries to do vogue, Gaga tries to do ‘in to the groove’ and they all fail to recapture Madonna’s maDgic.
Well, it is not the first time that others try to catch up to what Madonna fans have known all along.
Madonna sets the trends and Madonna fans appreciate her work first. Madonna has never released a mediocre album. All of her albums including American Life, Confessions on the Dance floor and Hard Candy are great albums with their own unique moods and attributes. American Life was a folk, reflective protest album, with social messages. It went to Number 1 in 37 countries, has sold around 5 million copies worldwide, over I million copies have been sold in the USA despite republican controlled radio ban.
Confessions on the Dance Floor, has sold nearly 14 million copies worldwide, generated many dance floor number ones, won a Grammy, had a international mega hit Hung Up. Along with other Madonna greats, it was indeed one of the best recordings of all time.
Hard Candy has sold more than 4 million copies worldwide with a quarter of its sales in the US alone. The album was packed with funky rhythms and innuendos. It provided a refreshing change in a market that was mainly filled with r& r rap and recession. She took her catchy and funky rhythms to the concert stadiums and had her biggest earning and record-shattering year. NY times and NY daily news gave Hard Candy five stars rating.
How many people have ever had a body of work that Madonna has? How many 50 year olds can emerge from a divorce with a multimillion selling number 1 album, unapologetically singing my sugar is raw, sticky and sweat? Who can dare to wear what Madonna could and did wear on the cover of Hard Candy album looking like a Hot White Candy rapped in Black in front of hot pink candy color background.
Only Madonna. Hail her MaDjesty for always giving her club fans something to celebrate.
I am not surprised at all that this or any other Madonna albums pup up on one best lists regularly. Madonna has never disappointed me.
Madonna is still creative and horny.
Whitney and Mariah are still moaning corny (boring). They belong in the back of choir line. Their ranges have long been surpassed by new artists such as Christina.
Madonna pups up on many best lists, one after the other. The haters can never stop that.
Good works have a way of reaching the audiences and critics alike. Madonna’s work have always been avant-garde. Her work is too good for some people’s ears at the time. It took years for some people to recognize that True Blue was a diamond of an album, way better than anything Whitney could ever offer.
Many of the pop records from that era sound so outdated. But True Blue still sounds and looks fresh and new like the very first time.
Confessions on the Dance not only had the International mega hit Hung Up(number 1 in 41 countries) it also had the dreamy trance dance floor number 1 ‘Get Together’ as well as cabaret style take it or leave it ‘Like it or Not’.
I love everything you said Khosrow especially about the Sugar is Raw and the Hard Candy cover,
Never mind that the hopeless Britney is at 5, who the hell compiled this list thought that talent-free drugista Amy Shitehouse was worthy of the no 2 position? If I want to hear a Phil Spector production, I’ll listen to The Ronettes or The Crystals, not a Karaoke-lite version by a drugged-up fake.
????? Sorry buy Yma youn can not call Amy Whinehouse talentfree??? she is a huge singing talent
Confessions is my fave Madonna album! :-) Glad its in the countdown!
Confessions is an M masterpiece as is Ray Of Light. Should have been further up but what does this dumb chart mean anyway? As for dickhead MD- M is not fading away, yeah right with having completed the highest grossing tour EVER by a single artist, and Hard Candy debuting at No.1 in 35 counteries! MORON YOU ARE!!!
Another queen with his head stuck up Madonna’s a*s
Sandy, get off Madonna’s jock strap. It’s been 20 years since she dumped you, let it go.
So true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Peter Marco, you are right.
…and American Life is being voted within the top 50 albums of the Decade in Germany…how funny because lots of moronic haters and fans dissed her very much for that album…just like others diss her for Hard Candy now…and like they dissed her for Erotica at its time…etc etc etc…having 2 albums being voted for best of the Decade in different countries just says it all!…SUCK THAT HATERS!
exactly, every record she puts out is of high quality and clarity, its only when looking back that most people can see them for the masterpieces they are. You can listen to American Life from beginning to end and every song is great
you really can´t compare erotica+american life with hard candy.
hard candy loses in every way.
why not? It certainly sold more copies
shitney is talking about quality not quantity
i think Madonna’s Confessions album was her strongest
since Erotica and Bedtime Stories, and Ray Of Light…
Confessions is a genuinely solid effort
i do think that Blackout was Britney’s weakest album overall,
with the sole exceptions of Gimme More and Piece Of Me, that
album was a bit hallow, i was not into any of Britney’s prior albums
for me, Circus is Britney’s strongest album to date, the bonus tracks
“Rock Me In” and “Phonography” are such great sounding songs, some
of my all time favorites form her
i hope for Madonna’s next full length studio album from Live Nation,
Madonna works in some really strong, fresh and new sounds / producers
into this next one, makes an overall great sounding record
Madonna (self titled) Erotica / Bedtime Stories / Ray Of Light
Music / American Life / Confessions On A Dance Floor are, and
always will be my favorite sounding albums from Madonna
and hopefully, with Madonna’s next album,
i will be able to add that to my list of classic Madonna albums
something to look forward to!
come you know she will, shell come out swinging like the home-run hitter she is
Confessions was a wonderful record. I can’t understand how she went from something so good like that to something so bad like Hard Candy.
Maybe it was because of her fights with Guy and her divorce that she couldn’t concentrate on the music.
But I hope she comes back strong with her next record.
This is really BAD NEWS – especially coming from Euopre where she supposedly is more popular. “Confessions” only made it to # 29 while Britney “Blackout” made it to # 5……more proof that Madonna aside from a successful tour every two years – Madonna is FADING AWAY.
Bad news? Madonna is fading? OMG! One article and you have a panic attack.
Besides Britney and Madonna almost no other female pop singer is on that list.( Mariah, Beyonce, Gaga, Kylie, Janet?)
And Britney ‘Blackout’ on 5!!!
