Listening to how utterly derivative this Goldfrapp song is, even while it’s fun ditty, you can see that she’s simply a pot calling a kettle black. And I can hear only vague connections between Black Cherry and Like it Or Not. However, this Goldfrapp song is SO straight out of the 80s synthpop style. Even while a fair bit of Hard Candy was early 80s, it felt more like it was winking at that music, not copying it directly. And also, it was copying the music that is not the obvious retro style. This song here is very obvious.

I’ve never heard of that Alison whatever. She could go on dreaming and badmouthing the queen Madonna if she wants. But I could not care less who Alison is or what she thinks. Postmodernism is neither a free ride nor free ticket. I guess little Alison doesn’t even know the meaning of that word. It is just not enough to name where the inspiration came from. The most important thing is the way it is done. Postmodernism began and ended with Madonna because she already did it all and did them in style 100 times better than the other artists. The rest is just the icing on the cake for her, a way of celebrating herself and the fans that grew with her music.
If Alison knew the meaning of Postmodernism, she would not imply that Madonna’s working with other famous artists and DJ’s is wrong. Why shouldn’t famous people work together? Another part of the meaning of postmodernism which Alison does not get is the fact that a true postmodern artist takes risks and chances and is not afraid of broadening his or her horizon by working with people who have a different style than his or hers. Postmodern does not mean working only with people that you admire, get along or identify with. In fact it means the opposite.

I love Goldfrapp, esp their ONJ-inspired new album, Headstrong. But I am terribly disappointed to read this comment. Madonna has even professed love for them before in the past–don’t know why she’s such a bitch about it. Much of Madonna’s work is ‘homage’–Vogue video, Express Yourself etc etc etc. M takes the best and does her own take–what’s wrong with that? She attaches herself to the hottest names and rides trends–so what? Does Alison realize that MADONNA is the magic ingredient in those collabs?
