Peter, 53, revealed that a friend – who was managing Madonna at the time – persuaded him to let her sing in the club for cult TV programme ‘The Tube’ but she was less forthcoming when asked to perform again when as club opened later that evening.

He said: “She was horrible. She was sat there with her back to us, and Rob went up and said ‘We were wondering if you wanted to appear later at the club’, and she just went ‘F**k off’.”

In the sketch, the duo argued over who was hotter before getting into a catfight.

“We were thinking, what do our fans want to see? And we thought, they want to see us fight. I was pulling her hair and we couldn’t stop laughing,” she added.

Those were practically the very first words I ever heard, personally, out of Madonna’s mouth.

I was at the 1990 New York premiere of Madonna’s highly entertaining documentary, Truth of Dare. I wasn’t covering it, exactly. I was there being interviewed by ABC’s “Primetime Live.” They were doing a segment on me. So, this event was an example of one of my “glamorous nights out.” And of course I was being pressed to speak to Madonna. I’d been writing about her exhaustively since 1984, so everybody assumed we were friends. In fact, I’d never clapped eyes on her. I told the ABC people, “Look, this is her premiere, I don’t think she wants to be part of my publicity!”

Somehow Madonna was corralled into a corner where I stood with the film crew. We exchanged hellos. Then the producer asked Madonna what she thought of me. She answered with the quote above, and we parted, laughing. (It couldn’t really be used on the air.)

So I had finally met this already legendary creature of music, video, and controversy. She was in a brunette phase, and looked gorgeous under a heavy coat of makeup. She was wearing a glittering Versace bodysuit, legs bare, bosom up and out. Yet in the brief moments I spent with her, I
sensed her less a sexual provocateur and more like a little girl dressed up outrageously in Mama’s finery. She seemed nothing at all like her sometimes vulgar, deliberately inyour-face image. As the years went by, and I got to know her better, I found her a much more serious and far more vulnerable person than she ever lets on. But she has been determined, right from the start, to never beg her audience
(or the media) for sympathy.

When I met Madonna for the first time. I met her at her home on Central Park West to talk about working on her Sex book. It was very comfortable but very uncomfortable at the same time, which is a very interesting feeling. She’s very imposing and knows what she wants. She’s very informed and opinionated, which makes her genius. She takes you in and swallows you up—and you don’t mind it, you actually enjoy it. There’s an unspoken seduction that goes on. I was young, She was young, too, and beautiful.

That was an unforgettable era.

Yeah, she put that book out at the best moment. She timed it very well. She knows what she’s doing. And such drive. Some people want to lift stones and see what’s under it. She’ll be on a beach with millions of stones and want to lift every one of them.

You have that kind of drive.

Matthew Bellamy: Ambition, whenever I hear the word, in my head, all I can think of is Madonna, for some reason. Her in the 80s. Very ambitious person and a great artist, certainly explores many avenues to get her name out there. I think she’s a very special lady.

Interviewer: As an artist I suppose people would associate your music with more the kind of rock genre, but when you were growing up, did you admire pop stars like that ? Did you see the scale of their performances and their image and find that quite appealing ?

Matthew Bellamy: Specially live performances. I think artists like Madonna and Michael Jackson are both amazing live performers. I remember seeing the footage of their concerts and really thinking, well that’s something really extraordinary. Rock bands don’t really do that…

The Scottish starlet, whose singing became a YouTube hit earlier this year, is said to have recorded her own version of ‘You’ll See’ to avenge her past critics.

“Susan chose it herself – it’s a song she has loved for years,” a source told The Sun newspaper.

“She sang it at auditions for TV shows and music contests when she used to be cruelly turned away by people”.

“At the end, when she was sometimes reduced to tears, she used to say, ‘You’ll See’. And she’s proof she can do it now as one of the most famous women in the world.”

Her debut album is due to be released in November.
