Dreamhive Puts Images to Music for Madonna

The Dreamhive animation studio provided dynamic music video background imagery for Madonna’s recent “Hard Candy” world tour, visually backing up two of the singer’s latest music hits.

For Madonna’s “Hard Candy” world tour and promotional appearances, The Dreamhive created striking animated background imagery for two of Madonna’s most popular songs — “4 Minutes” and “Give it 2 Me”. The imagery was then played during Madonna’s exciting stage performances of the songs during the Hard Candy promotional and concert tours.

For “4 Minutes,” The Dreamhive created footage with a flashing countdown clock that paid homage to Madonna’s music video for the song. Using reference images from the original music video, The Dreamhive created a dynamic CGI version of the practical digital countdown clock, which they then rendered using custom real-time shading code. Additionally, The Dreamhive re-created and animated the “black onyx” effect element seen in the music video, and also generated new effect passes that were then composited into live-action footage shot during the original video production.

“It was a terrific and extremely cool experience, to be adding our visual effects into footage from the set of the music video,” comments Wes Grandmont III, Senior CG Supervisor at The Dreamhive. The Dreamhive’s images mimicked the strong pulse and irresistible hook of the song, and as the images played behind Madonna onstage for the tour, Justin Timberlake then frequently joined the singer for the rest of the “4 Minutes” piece.

For the disco anthem “Give it 2 Me,” The Dreamhive created CG laser work that had an evocative, poppy, 80’s look and feel, and which combined with a live laser show to create a pulse of green and pink light beams flickering disco-style across the dancing crowd.

The Dreamhive created all of the imagery using Autodesk(R) Maya(R) software, outputting to 1080p resolution for the shows. On the laser creative work, The Dreamhive worked from storyboards of possible laser movement options, and then generated creative variations for use in the live shows.

Filth and Wisdom – Slant Magazine Review

It was my original intention to review Filth and Wisdom without ever mentioning Madonna’s name, but given how much the pop icon’s past and present—like her sense of image—informs every frame of the film, to have done so would have been foolish. More so than Angelina Jolie, whose screen performances have become near impossible to scrutinize without also grappling with her immense superstardom, Madonna brings considerable baggage to her feature-length directorial debut, which tells the story of a close-knit group of down-and-out London artists simply trying to get by—a story that not only suggests an elaboration on the lives of Madonna’s “Hung Up” dancers but a rebuke to Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Critics have fallen hook, line and sinker for Woody Allen’s trite vision of pretty people bumping uglies in fashionable Catalonia, lavishing the film with the sort of write-ups you’d expect to read in US Weekly and Travel and Leisure. (Even some of the most sensible film writers in the world have noted how shooting in Spain seems to have invigorated and liberated Allen—almost as if they were praising him for having had a bowel movement.) When jet-setting through posh European locales and seeing Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson make out is enough to give a movie a free pass, you know film culture has reached some sort of dead end. Indeed, so successful is the film’s luxe patina that Allen’s sexual and gender politics—like his repugnant reduction of the Mediterranean to a “lusty” type—have gone completely ignored. But Filth and Wisdom isn’t interested in creating such an obnoxious show of distraction. Full Article

Robyn … on Madonna

“Seeing that a lot has been reported about my experience of being on tour with Madonna in the press, I feel like I have to tell it like it is! So with my own words, here I go:

I got a chance to go on tour with Madonna in Europe and like any one who’s been a fan of her since the age of ten I was super exited. Contrary to what you might have read elsewhere its been FUN! I’ve played to Madonna’s audience in eleven different cities, all of which have received us well even though I was only the opening act. Me and my band got to know Madonna’s production team and they were very helpful. Madonna’s management was super cool and we hung out with the band and dancers and had a lot of fun with them. When I met her at the end of the tour she was really cool and natural. I got a chance to thank her for putting me on and she even told me she was a fan! It was a very special moment i will never forget.

When I arrived on the first day of the tour I was surprised by the tight security that involved us as well. It took a couple of days to find my place on this big adventure but the tour has been a once in a lifetime experience. I have gotten the rare opportunity to see an enormous production from the inside and get the chance to perform in front of tens of thousands of people at every show.

In one interview I was asked if I wanted a career like Madonnas and I said no, my worst nightmare would be trying to be a Madonna. She’s an icon and a pioneer, but only Madonna can be Madonna. It would be sad to try to copy her model. Times are different nowadays as well. Even if I tried, it would be hard to build what she has achieved in the climate of the music industry today. I want to be me and work from my own small independent record company.

I want to be left alone in my creative process. I imagine she has lots and lots of people telling her things. Every one watches her every move. Obviously she can cope with that, but for me that pressure would be a burden. Too many other people have cracked under much less pressure in the music world and as a woman it’s even harder to stay at the top. The peer pressure, fashion mags and media celebrate youth, beauty and the new in females and most people are lucky to stay around for 5 years. I learned that next to the president of the United States of America, Madonna must be the most famous person on earth whose every little move is watched by millions and a complete security state is surrounding her!

I´m from a little country called Sweden where even though a lot of people know me here, I still can go to the store and buy milk in my underwear. And I would love to keep that for me.

But who am I to judge her? Watching her on stage during the tour I could tell that she was really enjoying herself. She is probably doing exactly what she wants to do and that´s why she is so inspiring. I want to be like that as well, I want to be myself.”

Madonna’s Truth or Dare Returns Oct. 14 in Support of Raising Malawi

The truth is that one half of Malawi’s one million orphans have lost one or both parents to AIDS, the DARE is for 800 Madonna fans to donate money at the one-time screening of Madonna’s Truth or Dare on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at the Bloor Cinema to support Raising Malawi. As first revealed on Laineygossip.com, this special occasion which has been approved by Madonna, will be a chance for Madonna fans to have a flashback to the infamous Blonde Ambition Tour. Hosted by Elaine Lui (eTalk host and blogger for Laineygossip.com) and Iain Christiansen, CARE to TRUTH or DARE? will open its doors at 7 p.m., and the screening will commence at 8 p.m. As an incentive for fans to attend, the screening will also feature a sneak preview of Madonna’s directorial debut, Filth and Wisdom.

The event is open to the public; however no tickets will be sold in advance. Those wishing to attend are encouraged to show up early and make a donation at the Bloor Cinema (506 Bloor St. W.) box office. Only the first 800 donors will be admitted to the theatre. Please note that there is a suggested minimum donation of $15. 100 per cent of proceeds will be donated to Raising Malawi and guests will be informed how much has been raised once the screening has finished.

“Everyday in Malawi, hundreds of children die from preventable illness, thousands are affected by abuse and neglect, and millions face a lonely struggle for survival without parents or adult supervision,” says Madonna. “I urge you to please support Raising Malawi and remember: by committing a little bit of your time, talent, or treasures to these extraordinary children, you will help to save a life.”

“A night with Madonna and a few hundred of her most hardcore fans – all in support of a cause close to her heart… I can’t think of a smuttier (in the best way possible!) way to celebrate her career!” says Elaine Lui.

Since 2006, Raising Malawi has been dedicated to bringing an end to the extreme poverty and hardship endured by Malawi’s one million orphans. Co-founded by Madonna and Michael Berg, Raising Malawi uses a community-based approach to provide immediate direct physical assistance, support long-term sustainability, create education and psycho-social programs and build global awareness through multi-media and worldwide volunteer efforts. Raising Malawi works to distribute financial support that will help community-based organizations provide vulnerable children with nutritious food, proper clothing, secure shelter, formal education, targeted medical care and emotional support.

Truth or Dare, distributed by Miramax Films, is a revealing documentary chronicling the life of Madonna behind the scenes of her 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour. Released in 1991, the film was well-received by critics and at the box office. As of 2006, it is the sixth-highest grossing documentary of all time with a worldwide gross of $29 million.

Madonna’s directorial debut, Filth and Wisdom, is a hilariously sexy tale of three roommates who must delve into mischievous and naughty behavior in pursuit of bigger and brighter futures. A Ukrainian immigrant, A.K. finances his dreams of ‘trans-continental superstardom’ with his band, Gogol Bordello, by turning tricks as a role-playing cross dresser. As A.K. literally whips the privileged of London into shape, he also secretly pines for the object of his affection, Holly, an aspiring ballerina looking for her big break while moonlighting as a slippery stripper. Meanwhile, Juliette steals medicine from her pharmaceutical job in hopes of quenching her dreams of helping Africa’s youth. Filth and Wisdom is every bit as erotic and playful as it is poignant and touching, revealing the universal struggles we all face in our pursuits of happiness. Opens in select cities on October 24th.

Sponsors for the event include Laineygossip.com, The Bloor Cinema, E1 Films Canada Inc., Proud FM (103.9 FM), Sans Blah, Pauper’s Pub and Lucy Kilislian of Toronto’s Barclay Jewelry.

Seymour Stein on Madonna

…But his greatest coup came in 1982, when a DJ called Mark Kamins suggested he listen to a new singer called Madonna.

Stein was recovering from a heart infection at the time. “I was in the hospital, I had her come see me in the hospital,” he says. “We talked a deal in the hospital and we did the deal in the hospital.

“Within days, even before I got out of the hospital, she was starting to record what became her first single, Everybody, and we were off and running.”

Madonna’s desire to succeed “clinched it” with Stein, he says.

“I saw her staunch determination and I knew she would work as hard as I did and much harder, in fact. And that’s what you need in an artist.

“She worked harder than anybody. I just saw her perform in Berlin, and she still works harder than anybody.”

Sire became part of Warner Bros Records, where Madonna stayed until this year, when she signed a radical deal rumoured to be worth $120m (L59m) with touring giant Live Nation.

“Being an Italian-American girl, she was made an offer she couldn’t refuse,” Stein says.

Madonna leads fans in anti-Palin chant

Singer Madonna made it clear where her loyalties lie in the upcoming US presidential election.

In a rant at her Madison Square Garden show earlier this week, she told thousands of fans: ‘You know who can get off of my street? Sarah Palin!

‘I’m gonna kick her a** if she don’t get off of my street!’

Madonna performed a string of hits including the song ‘I Love New York’, which song features the line, ‘Get off my street’.

And her attack on the Republican’s bid for vice-president comes days after she told

thousands of fans in New Jersey on weekend: ‘Sarah Palin can’t come to my party. Sarah Palin can’t come to my show’.

With her audience full of celebrity fans and friends, including Rosie O’ Donnell, and Diddy, Madonna continued with her anti-Palin rant.

The 50-year-old superstar then mocked the Alaskan governor’s accent, before sarcastically telling the audience, ‘I love her’.

Even Palin’s husband Todd didn’t escape Madonna’s wrath, as she shouted, ‘This is the sound of Sarah Palin’s husband’s snowmobile when it won’t start up in the wintertime,’ before creating some ear-piercing feedback on her electric guitar as she launched into hit single ‘Hung Up’.

Madonna has already raised eyebrows on her current world tour by projecting images off presidential candidate Barack Obama next to Mahatma Gandhi, while juxtaposing rival John McCain with Adolf Hitler.

Madonna joins fellow celebrities Matt Damon, Brigitte Bardot, and Pamela Anderson , who have all been vocal critics of the self-described ‘hockey mom’.

Robyn ‘banned from talking to Madonna’

Swedish pop sensation Robyn was banned from approaching Madonna during her Sticky + Sweet tour – despite appearing as a supporting act.
The singer claims she was told by the Holiday hitmaker’s representatives not to approach her or take photos during the European leg of her tour.
She tells a Swedish newspaper, “I hadn’t expected any glamour, but it’s strange that they assume that the first thing you’re gonna do is run after Madonna and ask for an autograph.”
