Madonna offers relationship tips on ‘Marriage Ref’

Madonna doesn’t think a wife should withhold sex from a sloppy husband.

But she believes a wife should dispose of her late husband’s prosthetic leg to spare the feelings of the wife’s current mate.

This was some of Madonna’s relationship advice on NBC’s “The Marriage Ref,” where she joined actor-comedians Larry David and Ricky Gervais as a guest panelist on Thursday’s edition.

The show invites its panel of “experts” to help analyze real-life disputes between married couples, mostly for laughs. Host Tom Papa, aka The Marriage Ref, makes the final call.

In one case, Mindy Goldman was offering sexual favors to Alan, her husband of 28 years, if he would clean up their messy basement.

A good idea? “I think it’s weird that she wants him to be clean so that they can be dirty,” cracked Madonna.

Gervais wondered, “Could they combine the sex with the housework?”

Then Susan and David Harper, married for three years, were seen in their house squabbling over possessions left over from their past relationships. Susan wanted her husband to get rid of the sofa where David and his ex-wife might have had hanky-panky, while David complained about Susan hanging on to the ashes and prosthetic leg of Don, her late husband.

Madonna’s swift solution: “He gets rid of the couch, she gets rid of the leg.”

“This is easily the most uncomfortable hour I’ve ever spent in my life,” sighed Larry David in the midst of the debate.

“Why?” Madonna retorted. “Because you’re sitting next to a woman who’s standing up to you?”

“The Marriage Ref,” which premiered last week, has Jerry Seinfeld as a creator and producer.

Madonna & Vera Farmiga’s Royal Engagement

Vera Farmiga may very soon go from rolling around with George Clooney in Up in the Air to being told what to do by Madonna.

Farmiga says she’s hoping to star in a period romance that the Queen of Pop is not only producing and cowriting but also directing…

The movie is about the real-life drama surrounding England’s King Edward VIII’s decision in 1936 to abdicate the throne so he could marry twice-divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson. Farmiga would play Simpson. No male stars are attached yet, but Abbie Cornish has reportedly signed on for a role.

“She approached me,” Farmiga said of Madonna. “We sat for a cup of tea and again for a cup of tea. Hopefully, it will all come together.”

Farmiga is putting a lot of faith in Ms. Ciccone—she hasn’t seen anything she’s directed. “I’m actually not familiar with her work, and I told her this flat-out,” Farmiga admitted. “She sent a couple of films and I still haven’t seen them.”

But no matter. “I don’t really go by that,” Farmiga said. “I go by other things. I go by scripts. I go with what I think I can do with a character and if I feel a kinetic energy with someone and I feel we can uplift and challenge each other.”

And don’t bother telling Farmiga if Madonna’s only feature film directing work, the 2008 flick Filth and Wisdom, didn’t exactly win audiences or critics over. Farmiga said, “I certainly have things I wouldn’t want people to see.”

Madonna Announces Fashion Partnership With Macy’s

MG ICON, the newly formed joint venture between Madonna and Iconix Brand Group, Inc., announced its first direct-to-retail license agreement with Macy’s, Inc. for the “Material Girl” collection. “Material Girl” is a newly created, fast-fashion junior collection that will launch exclusively in approximately 200 Macy’s stores and online at www.macys.com in August 2010 for the back-to-school season.

As part of the direct-to-retail agreement, Macy’s will have the opportunity to launch additional brands with MG Icon in the future.

The “Material Girl” collection was inspired and designed in collaboration with Madonna and her daughter Lourdes, along with Iconix Brand Group’s in-house fashion department. In addition to the back-to-school apparel collection, “Material Girl” will also launch in multiple categories including footwear, handbags and jewelry. The collection will retail from $12.00 to $40.00, comparative with pricing strategies at junior specialty stores. The strategy for growth will include additional categories in the lifestyle and beauty sectors, including fragrance, beginning 2011 as well as a rollout into additional Macy’s stores.

Neil Cole, CEO and Chairman, Iconix, stated, “We are excited to announce the first in a series of new brands that will be developed under our partnership with Madonna. ‘Material Girl’ has a powerful retail partner in Macy’s and we look forward to working together to deliver an innovative launch for our consumers.”

“We believe that ‘Material Girl’ will be a dynamic exclusive brand for Macy’s, and we look forward to working with Madonna, Lourdes and the Iconix team. Madonna is a fashion icon who can bring a new dimension to our juniors customer,” said Jeff Gennette, Macy’s chief merchandising officer. “‘Material Girl’ will enhance the excitement of fast fashion at Macy’s.”

Madonna, Iconix Form Joint Branding Venture

Iconix Brand Group Inc. (ICON) and an entity controlled by entertainer Madonna and her manager Guy Oseary are forming a joint venture to develop and acquire brands.

The company, a brand manager whose holdings include Candie’s and Roca Wear, said the MG Icon venture entered into an exclusive license and services agreement that allows the use of Madonna’s name and personality in connection with apparel, footwear and other products. The entertainer agreed to provide creative services related to development and promotion of the venture’s brands.

Iconix said MG Icon will soon announce a direct-to-retail agreement with Macy’s Inc. (M).

Iconix launched five direct-to-retail partnerships in the U.S. last year, while renewing four. It also formed a third international joint venture and acquired stakes in Ecko and Ed Hardy.

Madonna stated in a release, “Joining forces with Iconix to bring my fashion ideas to consumers is very exciting for me.” She said she looks forward to working closely with Iconix “to create and translate my vision and ideas for MG Icon.”

Iconix shares closed Wednesday at $15.26 and were inactive premarket. The stock has more than doubled in the past year.

Jean Paul Gaultier on meeting Madonna

How did they originally meet? “I was a fan,” he says. “She made her first concert in Paris in 1987 or 1988, and there was a party after. I was intimidé, but she was first to arrive, waiting for everybody. She was like this always for 10 years, always on time but now… boof, finished! She is the last one,” he laughs.

“Alors, she was super-cute, so I said to ’er, ‘I would love to do something super-special for you.’ She was like, ‘Yeah, yeah, okay.’ Then, two days before my show, I receive a phone call. They tell me it’s Madonna, but I’m like, ‘Yeah, yeah, okay, whatever.’ I don’t believe it’s possible. But the next day I ask if it’s true, and there is a number and I call and she answers and tells me to come to New York and we prepare for the tour.”

So began a working relationship they’ve dipped in and out of for 20 years. A friendship also developed, though I suspect Gaultier retains a fan’s fascination. “I went to a club with her and all the good-looking boys were looking, but not recognising her. She was so famous, they couldn’t imagine she would be there, so they were cruising her.”

However, his most hilarious Madonna memory relates to her wedding to Guy Ritchie in 2000. “He wore a kilt with nothing under,” says Gaultier approvingly. How do you know? “I ask him, ‘It’s true?’ He say, ‘You see!’” he says, miming Ritchie whipping up his skirt. And was it…? “Well, I understood Madonna! Hahaha!” he cackles, then shouts in delight as a plate of fish and different pastel-coloured mashed potatoes is placed in front of him. “Très anglaises, les colours! Like zee English lady! The Queen Mother!”

Madonna Plays the Muse

“Collaboration. I like being his muse,” Madonna told us, explaining her relationship with photographer Tom Munro at a private party and opening last night, to celebrate the photographer’s first book, a collection of celebrity portraits. (Partial proceeds of of the book will go to Madonna’s charity, Raising Malawi, and M.E.A.K.) Madonna, wearing black fishnet stockings, leather skirt and dark sunglasses at 10 p.m. in a dark room, blew off the Weinstein Company party at Soho House and the Summit Entertainment reception for “The Hurt Locker” at the Mondrian, for the gallery opening, where she spent most of the time on the lap of Steven Klein, another celebrity fashion photographer.

Mr. Munro, who has directed a couple of videos with Madonna, said his dream was to move into the direction of feature films and he credited Madonna as “an inspiration. ”

Rumour: All Madonna Glee EP

When “Glee” returns in April, fans will have their first new episode in over four months, as well as a new “Glee” EP. “Glee: The Music – The Power of Madonna” features the “Glee” versions of the Madonna tracks featured on the special Madonna-themed episode.

According to Tommy2.net, among the hits being performed on the soundtrack are some of Madonna’s greatest hits, like “Vogue,” “Express Yourself,” and “Like a Prayer.” Every track performed on the show’s April 20th episode, “The Power of Madonna,” comes from the pop superstar’s discography.

The EP will be released the week prior, when the show returns from its hiatus to Fox on April 13th. “Glee: The Music – The Power of Madonna” follows the successful “Glee: The Music” Volumes 1 and 2 soundtracks. A Volume 3 is expected to follow, which may feature some or all of the Madonna tracks.
