Madonna Interview : Smash Hits

Madonna - Smash Hits / February 25 - March 10 1998

As an expert in the subject, what’s the most fantastic thing about pop music?
How accessible it is.

What are your favorite records at the moment?
Air – they rule. And Baxter. The Swedish group who are going to have a record out on Maverick (Madonna’s record label) soon.

As head of their American label, do you ever boss the Prodigy about?
The only way to deal with the Prodigy is to ignore them. They only respect you if you insult them.

What do you think of Smack My B*tch Up?
Really cool song and really cool video.

Are you alarmed that cowboy boots are making a comeback this year?
I own three pairs.

But we thought you hated cowboy boots?
A girl can change her mind, can’t she?

So what’s lined up as your next film project?
The only project that is a thousand per cent definite is Chicago (a musical in which Madonna will perform alongside actress Goldie Hawn). There is a possibility I will do another film before then, but I’m just not sure at this time.

You once claimed that you couldn’t cook anything except popcorn. Are you still clueless in the kitchen?
Yeah, I am still clueless, but I can make love in the kitchen.

Ahem! So, erm, what’s your favorite TV show?
I do not watch TV.

Who would you most like to be signed to Maverick?
Smashing Pumpkins (groovy US rock combo).

Will you tour this year?

In what way is your daughter Lourdes like you?
She is very dramatic. She has to have her own way. She is very curious.

What music does she like?
Anything I play. But her favorite is a 12″ remix of the Macarena.

What do you think of the Spice Girls?
I love all the Spice Girls. But I like Posh Spice the best this week – because she is mysterious.

Where would you like a potential boyfriend to take you on a date?
To Venice, Italy.

What’s the most ridiculous rumor you’ve heard about yourself?
The latest, most ridiculous rumor is that I will be playing Princess Diana in a movie about her life.

What’s your fitness regime these days?
Yoga, yoga, yoga.

So how has motherhood changed you?
In every way. I also sleep a lot less.

Lastly, is it good to be back?
Back where? I never left and I am never going away.
