Madonna on Lourdes: My Little Material Girl

C’mon vogue! Superstar Madonna opens her heart to US about launching a teen fashion line with her daughter.

Madonna may be a style icon, but that doesn’t mean daughter Lourdes Leon, 13, takes her advice. “If anything, I wish she’d dress more conservatively,” says the pop star, 51. “How’s that for irony?” In a rare interview, Madonna tells Us about her budding fashionista and their first collaboration: the aptly named teen clothing line Material Girl, set to hit Macy’s stores this August.

Why a teen collection?

I did a line for H&M, which I enjoyed, but it was a lot of work. I thought, I don’t want to give up the rest of my careers, so I’m not going to do my own line again. But I have a 13-year-old with tireless energy who wanted to do this. I’ve been involved in business meetings, but Lola’s really doing the work. I just sit in the corner on my BlackBerry!

Describe her style.

It’s inspired by kids she sees in hip-hop and ballet classes, European influences, bands she listens to. You could say it’s in the DNA — but I could never tell her how to dress! She also comes to my photo and video shoots, pulls outfits together and gives her input to a lot of my fashion-designer friends. Whether it’s Marc Jacobs or Stella McCartney, they always ask her what she thinks.

Will she become a fashion designer?

She was always sketching, sewing — and stealing stuff from my closet and wearing it in ways I wouldn’t! But she just got into a performing-arts high school and is majoring in drama. She wants to be an actress. I’m not pushing her in any area. I just urge her to take whatever she does seriously.

Does she tell you how to dress?

Uh, yeah! Like every day! You don’t want to be caught in the glare of Lola! Sometimes I change — and sometimes I stand up to her, damn it!
